What happens if this thing goes off the rails here soon?

Now, in all fairness, neither McCarthy or Dak are terrible enough with the talent around them to have this season imploded on itself. To the dismay of the logical fans amongst us, they'll probably win just enough games to keep Jerry happy and hopeful and we all get screwed again.

But what happens if the season goes sideways? Do they even consider pulling Dak for Lance? Once you do that, there is no coming back from that, you have to move Dak in the offseason. I don't think Jerry wants any part of that. Would McCarthy try to make the move and have Jerry overrule him?

If the season goes sideways, the smart move would be to bench Dak and play Lance and see what you have. Stop worrying about 2024. If Dak and McCarthy can't make it work this year, thinking that next year will be different is dumb. It's bandaid pulling time if this season implodes onIF itself.

If we had competent leadership in the GM office, they'd be planning, even quietly, the process of what to do if this goes sideways - how they handle the QB spot, what to do about the coaching staff, etc. There is no reason if this season is a dud, especially if things implode and they miss the playoffs, to bring back either Dak or McCarthy.

PS - Another fear. I like Quinn. But I also think if Jerry is forced to **** can McCarthy, he'll retread Quinn as the HC. Another bad decision in the making.
IF ???

I think McCarthy could get very get fired at the end of the year. I actually think he is out without an NFCCG appearance. Dak's fate could rest on his replacement

Jerry will take everyone behind the woodshed, including himself, and then keep doing the same things.

Because Rush is the back up. It doesn't depend on the situation. Unless Rush is hurt, he is the guy. They aren't putting a guy out there who isn't ready yet.

I know why they brought Lance in. Everyone does.

Bottom line - Lance won't be ready by then. He not be ready for the beginning of the 2024 season after a full off season, training camp and pre-season.

A year from now it might be different. But for 2023, It's Rush with Lance maybe getting a little cleanup duty. Here is a clue - last Sunday in the 4th quarter who came in Rush or Lance?
Because they don’t have a choice. Rush has to come in because Lance can’t by rules. And yes, right now, while the Cowboys are in playoff contention, Rush would be the #2.

But if the season cratered and our season was largely over, Lance would be made the #1 to see what they have, Dak would be #2 and Rush would be emergency #3.

Trey Lance will never be QB1 even if it’s the last game of the season and the team he’s playing for is 0-16. Trey Lance has Hamilton Tiger-Cats written all over him.

I sincerely hope it does and I hope Dak Prescott has the same game against the Chargers as he did against the 49ers. This whole thing needs to be blown up.
I hate saying it but I agree

We're clearly not a contender

The worst thing that could happen would be having just enough success to convince Jerry that next year could be "the year"

We need a complete collapse that is so monumental that there is no choice but to burn it to the ground and start over

(With a new GM but sadly that'll never happen)

That simply will never happen. If for no other reason it would piss off all the vets. Lance just isn't ready.

I think it depends on the situation. If we are in Game 11 or 12 or so and the team is 4-7 or 5-8 and a long shot for the playoffs, what's the point of playing Rush? There is no upside. They brought Lance in as a potential successor down the line for Dak. So if they have to replace Dak because the season is basically over, they aren't playing Rush.
IDK, this craptastic org just might. Don't forget cutting Matt Moore to keep Brad Johnson, a player who was good at one time but no longer had an NFL arm.

Dak is on the books for a ton of money next year. I think he is here next year. Now would be the time for JJ to extend him for a year or 2. I am not kidding. JJ really thinks Dak can do it. He is hard headed. He brought Lance in on the cheap. If it goes off the rails and if we are out of playoff hunt with some games left then he may see what Lance has. He knows what he has in Rush. Now if Lance comes in and lights it up like Dak did after he took over for Romo then it may get interesting depending on how many games he plays.
And a 34 mill cap savings if he is cut in March

IF you decide to bench Dak, you better have a plan on how to eat his 2024 cap and dead cap. Cuz like you said, there's no coming back and DO NOT expect him or France to help ya with the cap. In other words, if he's benched, you are probably going to have to take two steps backward to gain one step.

Re: Moore- One could alternatively say that Dak "did not fair so well against good defenses". KM was handicapped by the QB.

I'm in the camp that believes Herbert can play. He throws passes Dak can only dream of.
I don't disagree. But he still has not won anything.

It won't go off the rails. It won't be good, because our schedule the rest of the way gets very tough, but there are enough Giants and Commanders type cupcake games to keep us around .500 and driving for a playoff spot.

Trey Lance failed in an offense that has made every other signal caller who's played in it look good. He is a bag of tools with one good year at North Dakota State 5 years ago. This dude is not the savior, and he will not be making starts this year.
