What Has Garrett Shown Any of You?

I like tacos.

I don't know what tacos have ever done to make you like them as a food. Sure all the ingredients are there: wonderfully spiced meat, crispy lettuce and tomatoes, and a crunchy shell. But when crunch time comes all the stuff falls out of the bottom. Proper meal management becomes impossible.

Give me a time tested food like a leftover and reheated burrito any day. Especially something safe to eat without any flavoring.

Jimmy's Cowboys went 1-15 his first year and the offense was well....offensive. Garrett took over a team that had just made it to the second round of the playoffs the prior year so that tells you the talent level. You can name all the players you want that became great player under Jimmy but they were not great players when he started.
The thing is we don't know what players will become great under Garrett. He has gotten rid of all the players he had no use for and is (dare I say it) rebuilding this team into his vision. I'm willing to live with his mistakes as a new coach because he seems to have a direction he wants his team to go. This is his first year having a full offseason to start coaching up his team and rookies in the "process" he is always referring to, I think he deserves a chance to make it happen. If not then who do you think would do better??? One of the retreads that has been a coach before and didn't do anything where they came from so now they get the Cowboys to do the samething they did before that didn't work. Besides the point, not having been here as Garrett has, a different HC may have thought players like Gurode, Brady and the rest of the aged, not wanting to hit businessmen this team had (and I'm not saying Brady didn't want to hit it was just the culture of the team) were worthy of keeping around because they wouldn't KNOW what kind of character they had as the new coach would be just walking in the door. Garrett knew his players and knew who had to go vs who to keep and for the first time in eons Jerry stayed the hell out of the way. So if for nothing else than just getting Jones to STHU and let the coach do something he has my vote. NOW if you want to get me started ask me about Jerry the GM...

you know it would help if you checked your facts before you posted. dallas was #2, #7 and #10 in scoring in garrett's 4 year as OC.....is that average?

and you tout sparano, yet what did he do in miami? oh yeah, lets wait, yeah wait to see what he does in Jets land before you pass him as this great offensive mind.

and what did garrett do? get rid of gurode, barber, roy williams, davis and any other fat cat who had a sense of entitlement. turned a 1-7 team into a 6-10 team. during that span, cowboys were #2 scoring team.

what he has done is have two good drafts in a row. as opposed to 2008-2009 under wade phillips.

he changed culture of the team. more important than anything else, but I can understand you being from microwave generation, if its not done in 30 seconds, you move on.

actually YOU need to check the statistics....
2011- 15th in pts

2009- 14th in pts

2008- 18th in pts

2007- 2nd.....hmm i wonder why the huge drop off after sparano left??

so sparano leaving had no effect on the offense droping 16 SPOTS with the same exact personel??!?

the cowboys won the NFC EAST TITLE 11-5 in 2009....obviously garrett had tons of talent, but they quit on Wade.

get YOUR facts strait.

I don't think he talks to his players the same way that he talks to the media. Most of the time he treats them like the critics they are but these last two were different. He said many of the cliches he is prone to do but went far beyond that for once.

I think this is exactly right. The PCs are interesting more as an exercise in avoiding the dramatic stupidity that usually accompanies PCs in Dallas. Though it's cool when JG brings out a reference from way, way back, or from another sport and shows how bright he really is.

I'm *sure* he's not talking to the players this way, because his conferences to the media have almost no content, and by all accounts Garrett's really detailed and thorough in the player meetings.

I love the guy, and can't for the life of me understand what any Cowboy fan has against him during his short tenure as HC. He's going to need to start winning the games that really count, but you can tell that he's building something, and that the players are buying in. Other than non-moves I'd like to have seen them make (signing Waters, drafting a decent CB last season, competition at OC this season), I haven't disagreed with any single move the team's made the last two years. We're going about things smart, and, as other posters have noted, our last few drafts look to have been good.

I'm sure he doesn't talk to the players the same way. He couldn't have for them to all buy into his program.

But because of the history of his monotone, cliche-filled PCs, I just don't care to hear his PCs, which may cause me to miss on the rare PCs where he provides some insight.

I like how you left out 2010. Confirmation bias is FUN!!!

2010 they went 6-10??

I'm basically making garrett look better by leaving out this year.

they were 7th in offense, with a backup QB. those stats are obviously inflated through defensive turnovers that were being created as soon as wade left.

so 3 out of 4 years of mediocre scoring and zero goal-line offense isn't enough to prove my point?

I don't need bias when you are ingrained towards the opposite

WOOT!! Confirmation bias. He had the 7th most points in the league and that was for the whole season not just the end. Every year he seems to rack up a ton of yards and that was the stats he was citing. After Colombo and Barber got hurt and age caught up to Gurode and Adams our OL play went into the toilet. You miss the rebuilding job we have done? Only Free is left from those lines.

Blisters? Yeah. The only question is who got toasted.

I don't know who's stats are right but it has been interesting. Keep up the fun.:)

This is the part where I say "Truly, you have a dizzying intellect." And then you say, "Wait till I get going! Now, where was I?" And I say "Australia" and then you talk some more and then take a sip and this thread starts to finally get better.

Some people are absolutely positively clueless as to what the FULL realm of responsibilities are of a coach. Everyone wants to look at production-well, it's not that damn simple.

An elite coach has to be a great leader

An elite coach has to be a great motivator

An elite coach has to be a great preparer

An elite coach has to have great focus

An elite coach has to be a great listener

NONE OF THESE QUALITIES WILL BE FOUND ON THE STAT SHEET.

On top of all of these things - An elite coach also has to be a great game manager - <---this here is where Garrett needs to show marked improvement. But if you ask me, this is the EASIEST skill set of them all to learn and imo, it's Garrett's biggest weakness, which is a good thing bc I think he does a hell of a job in those other MORE VITAL areas.

The one thing Garrett has shown me so far is that he is not someone who is stubborn or doctrinaire.

I was critical of him last year not bringing in an OC to help him out. He thought he didn't need one and could continue to do what he did in 2010 out of necessity that lead to a 5-3 turnaround after a 1-7 start. However, I think he didn't understand what it meant to be the HC for the full 52 weeks rather than just the last 8 weeks of the season. Even during the season when we were doing well I think he thought he could do both rolls. I do think he was somewhat embarassed by tactical errors made in gameclock management and realized he needed to have his mind focused on the big picture and not the micromanaging of the offense. So he didn't dig his heels on his past statements and said he needed to change. I believe he'll apply this same process to all components of his coaching. He will be very critical of him self and will constantly try to identify his weaknesses in an effort to be a better coach.

I really like the job he has done in reconstructing the coaching staff. No one got outed or shown up in the media. He thanked everyone for their contributions and brought in upgrades when they were available. I really like the additions of Rob Ryan, Callahan, Jerome Henderson, Mike Woicik and Jimmy Robinson. I think it is hard to argue that this is not a great collection of football minds to have on the roster.

I also like most of the decisions made on roster management. I really liked how he quickly he got rid of all the dead weight on the roster. I respect that he went most of his first year with a team $20M under the cap in a season when he knew it would be hard to contend so that he could have a better roster this year not handcuffed by $25M of dead cap money in a season where he would have a better chance. This shows the ability to think long-term about building a winner in a methodical manner even if some decisions may make you slightly weaker in the short-term. To me this is how you have sustained success instead of brief flashes. I do think they have been quite surgical in his second go at free agency and he seems to be quite value-minded in the acquisitions they sought. For example, I think he didn't sign more expensive OGs and OCs because he believes a cohesive group of slightly above average players is far more important than having one dominant player paired with two weaker ones. He is patient enough to let his young OL develop while recognizing the need to protect his QB.

I won't go too much into specifics yet with him as I feel he hasn't been given enough time to put his stamp on the team. I think one more draft and FA period should complete the conversion of this roster into the one he wants although it is a shame we have to deal with that $5M penalty again next season.

I will say that some are unduly harsh with him because they overrated our talent and have failed to account for the roster weakening greatly from the one we had in 2007 due to subpar drafts from 2006-9. The players in those drafts should represent the core of this team right now but instead we don't have much of significance in the starting 22 from that group - Hatcher, Spencer and Free. That leaves the heavy lifting to young guys who don't have much experience left and old vets who are all used up or startin their decline. So even though we were great in 2009 we are already well into our decline in 2010 which actually would have accelerated even more last year except for two good drafts in 2010 and 11 and some luck in FA (Laurent Robinson). I think the downtrend in this team fully reverses this year and we should be back around 2009 level of play.

And you can name all the players that had been great/good under Parcells/Phillips but were not great players when he started.

Gurode, Adams, Colombo, RW11, Barber, Ball, James, Brooking, Newman, Olshansky et al were terrible. then you have Kosier, Costa, Newman, Brooking, James, Elam, Coleman etc being spares as well.

We have some stars but so did that 89 team but acting like this team has been loaded with depth and quality at all positions is just asinine. You better not be one of those that thinks Jerry is bad at talent acquisition and use that same brain to make this argument.

Point blank Garrett had more talent to start with than Jimmy, to argue this point is asinine. Name the stars on that 89 team that were playing at a pro bowl level in 1989. If you can name any, I can name 2 on Garretts first team for every 1 on Jimmy's first team.

At the end of the day, the 2010 team didn't have to be as bad as Jimmy's 1989 team for the point to be valid. Garrett stopped the nose dive last year, playing his backup QB. There's no debating that. It was an impressive accomplishment under the circumstances and one that merits credit in a thread titled 'What has Garrett Shown Any of You?'

Point blank Jimmy went 1-15 and Garret went 5-3.

And lol at pro bowl berths for Gurode and 2010 Ratliff being the measuring stick.

Alan Ball was the worst starting safety in the NFL in 2010 although Spievey gave him a run. That team quit on Phillips. Jason Witten made the probowl but i watched him quit in the Green Bay game. That was literally my lowest point as a Cowboys fan.

So what do you think of the rosters Jerry Jones put together in 2007 -2010? You think Jones did a good job stockpiling talent?

Garrett on a good note has shown very positive leadership that cannot be easily replaced or reproduced.

Beyond that, not much.

Look, I never said that I didn't want to give Garrett a chance and that's what I'm doing, taking a wait and see approach. It's just that I don't think that he's done enough to be mentioned, by some, in the same sentence as Landry or Johnson yet.

It's that old annointing oil that Parcells talked about, I'm about productivity and that's Ws and Ls. All this "process" talk is just that until it translate on the field into wins.

Every coach comes into the league with a philosophy that they think will work but for some reason or another most of them don't, what makes you think that Garrett won't be different? I'm a Cowboys fan so I hope that his philosophy does work because I think what he's trying to do is sound but what he wants this team to do and what they actually do maybe two different things.

I've been reading these same fluff pieces, in the offseason, with quotes from the players about how this year's going to be different for about 8 seasons now and what I've seen on the field has been the same thing. A team that is heavily penalized, a defense that's finesse, entitled players and lately some of the most heart breaking losses in the history of the Cowboys.
