What if romo turns his hat backwards, Flashes that smile, and says I'm coming for that *** dak? With a wink and a competitive spirit.

How would the cowboys handle that?

That sounds like that scene out of deliverance.
Dak sure has a purty mouff.

I love Romo, wish this could happen and would love for an open competition between the two, not to mention the security of having two good QBs on the roster.

That said, Dak's play in 2016 made Romo's salary cap hit in 2017 unwarranted. Even if there is a drop off from Dak to Romo, the team (and I along with them) feel Dak's play at QB is perfectly competent as a starter, with a chance to become dominant and elite. They can't justify the cost of Romo.

It's not going to happen, he's not going to want to compete for a job he never lost on the field. This is Dak's team and the QB position is his, Romo WILL NOT be here next season. Neither player is going to want to compete for the job, it would make for a distraction in camp.

In theory, if Romo said that this was his last year, and pointed out that he sat down and didnt say a word while Dak went one and done, there isn't any real reason why the role couldn't reverse for one year. The argument that it would hurt Dak's progress is stupid, Tony didn't play at all for 3 1/2 seasons and Aaron Rodgers didn't play at all for 3 seasons. The only people who wouldn't like it are the Dak slobberers.
In reality, I still think Tony would voluntarily step aside even if Jerry said he could get the job back. I think he remembers when he was Dak, and how he got the job himself way back when. And I think he respects that.

Didn't romo say he wanted a chance to compete around week 8?

Why would it be different during the offseason or at practice? Assuming he's still on the roster around that time.

No real competitor would NOT want to be able to compete for a starting job. And Romo, by all account, is ultra competitive....always having to compete at something to keep his juices going.

He wanted to compete to have a fair and square shot at getting his job back, lost to injury, this past year.

But the team was doing so well with the new young gun (and the future) Dak, that they said "no thank you".

They will not let him have a fair shot at it.
In many ways, I don't blame them. They have their guy.

Don't ask me who I think would win a straight up fair and square competition...as my answer would draw out some real hate around here. lol

Bottom line is that Dak did great and the future is bright with him at the helm.

Romo will be playing elsewhere.

Jerry likes distractions.

Good post. At romos age and with his injury history I can see him saying let me compete and if I'm not the better guy I'll be the wily veteran backup and save my body and keep my family in dallas.

So cut Romo June 1 and ride with dak? I'm ni gambling man but what are the odds of dallas getting the #1 seed next year? And what are the odds of dak winning a playoff game?

If it were all up to Jerry, I think Romo would have his shot to compete for the starting job next year.

But Garrett, and especially Stephen, thinks more logically when it comes to "what's better for the team". And what most benefits the team, going down the road, is for us to eat what $$ we have to by getting rid of Romo now, and build a stronger overall team with the extra cap space we get.

I'd personally like to have Tony back as our QB to finish out his career, but it's just not logical anymore.

I'm all for Romo, I still believe Tony is the better optoon but this is Dak's team, no doubt about it.
Tony will be starting somewhere else next season.

Honestly...I think the situation could work out in the Cowboys favor...and here is how. Open up the QB competition...but here is the catch. Tony has to take a paycut and re-do his contract based on playing time. If Romo wins the job...then he makes back the money he sacrificed by hitting his playing time incentives. If he doesn't win the job...then you still have a pretty good backup QB that makes the appropiate amount a backup QB should make.

Plus...it still lights a fire under Dak. As good as this kid played last year...I'm still not sold. Was he a one year wonder? And do you really roll into next year w/ no proven backup QB?

Considering your opinion of Moore I think you are the last person on this site to discuss anything regarding quarterbacks. Ever.
