What if Romo wants to compete for the starting job next year?

My question would be this. Romo wasn't allowed to compete for his job last year, why would he ever think he'd be in a fair competition for QB1 this off season?
I'm not sure it would be possible to rig a QB competition for Dak unless it was just declared to be a continuous series of 40-yard dashes.

If the problem was the Quaterback play then yes they would no doubt hold and open competition. But it wasn't. So they shouldn't. And they won't.

I think an open competition in training camp is different than a mid season switch.

In this scenario both guys are willing competitors and the practices would reflect that high intensity. And both guys are going into it willing to be the backup if they lose the job. And both guys emulate romos team first attitude of last year and play backup with a smile. And that it's a long season and they may play anyway.

There's no reason to have an open QB competition this is Dak's job, he's earned it and he solidified it by leading us to the playoffs, statically outplaying Aaron Rodgers and earning a Pro Bowl birth. Romo is in no condition to "compete" he needs rest days and if you give him too many snaps in preseason he could end up being injured again. To have a QB competition both QBs need an equal amount of preseason work with the first team to make it a fair competition. Preseason is for young players and any team will tell you it's always best to have your QB situation settled by training camp. Our QB situation isn't a problem it was settled in 2016 and some of you need to move on from Romo because the team has.

What if romo turns his hat backwards, Flashes that smile, and says I'm coming for that *** dak? With a wink and a competitive spirit.

How would the cowboys handle that?
Then they should trade him for a case of powdered Gatorade.
The near future is too important to monkey with his ego.

The Dallas Cowboys are Dak Prescott's team and Romo knows that. I am 100% certain he just wants to move on and play elsewhere. Jerry will accommodate him and likely release him before free agency begins. Their bond goes beyond football and bonds matter. Romo in the right situation could have a Kurt Warner in Arizona rejuvenation...we shall see. But, my QB's days in Dallas are over.

In theory, if Romo said that this was his last year, and pointed out that he sat down and didnt say a word while Dak went one and done, there isn't any real reason why the role couldn't reverse for one year. The argument that it would hurt Dak's progress is stupid, Tony didn't play at all for 3 1/2 seasons and Aaron Rodgers didn't play at all for 3 seasons. The only people who wouldn't like it are the Dak slobberers.
In reality, I still think Tony would voluntarily step aside even if Jerry said he could get the job back. I think he remembers when he was Dak, and how he got the job himself way back when. And I think he respects that.
Careful, lad, don't get your slobber on the Tony Romo keyboard ....

By releasing him if they can't trade him. He's not going to complete with Dak....that ship has sailed, along with his huge contract. Tony Romo will not be a Dallas Cowboy next season....period....end of story.

> Aaron Rodgers throwing to geronimo allison and nursing a 21 point first quarter lead. Switch the qbs in that game and dallas wins honestly maybe probably 70-3.

Why is everything in the national football league (/Schlereth) so traditional and regimented? They went one and done. They could've shown up that day without pants and spun in circles and it would've been the Same result.

Romo is not going to take a pay cut. He is not going to tell his wife that he is risking further injury AND taking a pay cut.

Kellen Moore should be the backup to Dak unless they find another quality QB in the 4th round or if they get a young QB in return when they trade Romo. For example, Siemian would be a good backup to Dak if the Cowboys traded Romo to the Broncos.

I am not sure about that. I think if Romo had a salary of $7 million next year to hold a clipboard and back up Dak Candace would be all for that. $7 million smokes and the chances of further injury goes way down.

The management of the team would never allow that. They'd simply not allow him to compete with Dak.
Yes I mentioned before the fact they finally found a decent/above average qb for peanuts makes them feel like geniuses and they aren't gonna go back.

There's a crazy scenario in my head tho that romo essentially says "I'm kinda old but I can still play. Pay me as much as dak is being paid and I'll either be the backup and live with that and enjoy my life. or I'll win the job(or save our season if something goes awry). Finishthefight

"We completely support Dak as our starting quarterback, unequivocally.
So, that's that. There's no issue there at all."

Dude what if witten is angling to join him

Doubt that would happen MBIV but wouldn't be shocked if Romo tries to recruit TWill, Leary and Escobar wherever he lands. He will likely lobby for those guys if the team he is playing for has needs at those positions.
