What if Romo wants to compete for the starting job next year?

So cut Romo June 1 and ride with dak? I'm ni gambling man but what are the odds of dallas getting the #1 seed next year? And what are the odds of dak winning a playoff game?
Just telling you what I think will happen.
If I was forced to guess, I think he'll be released or traded.

Jerry likes distractions.

He won't want that kind of distraction heading into camp. The reason the team had Romo hold a press conference relinquishing his job saying this is Dak's team was to put an end to the speculation and distraction. If the Cowboys are going to take the next step in 2017 and build on what they did this season they have to go into camp with the QB position settled. Dak didn't do anything this season for him to have to compete for his job. He took over the job and secured it with a 13-3 season and a Pro Bowl selection.

What if romo turns his hat backwards, Flashes that smile, and says I'm coming for that *** dak? With a wink and a competitive spirit.

How would the cowboys handle that?
Let it go. It's not going to happen.

The Cowboys might hold on to Romo for an extended period of time waiting for trade offers. Romo will have more trade value if Jerry says that he is going to keep him. If that happens, then fans/media will start getting claiming that Romo is going to be the starter again; however, the Cowboys will move on from him before game 1, whether it is a trade, cut or retirement.

Honestly...I think the situation could work out in the Cowboys favor...and here is how. Open up the QB competition...but here is the catch. Tony has to take a paycut and re-do his contract based on playing time. If Romo wins the job...then he makes back the money he sacrificed by hitting his playing time incentives. If he doesn't win the job...then you still have a pretty good backup QB that makes the appropiate amount a backup QB should make.

Plus...it still lights a fire under Dak. As good as this kid played last year...I'm still not sold. Was he a one year wonder? And do you really roll into next year w/ no proven backup QB?
Romo is not going to take a pay cut. He is not going to tell his wife that he is risking further injury AND taking a pay cut.

Kellen Moore should be the backup to Dak unless they find another quality QB in the 4th round or if they get a young QB in return when they trade Romo. For example, Siemian would be a good backup to Dak if the Cowboys traded Romo to the Broncos.

I would let him compete for it, but he has to understand if he doesn't win the starting job, he gets to be backup again.

I like Romo and dak, think we are solid either way....but this defense is horrible o well get what you pay for right...Church gone! Scandic gone! Crawford gone! Claiborne gone!

We wouldn't be solid with Romo because he can't stay healthy. He hasn't played a full 16 games since the 2012 season. We're solid with Dak, he's young, healthy and had the greatest rookie season of any rookie QB in league history. We're building something with him and he's our QB going forward. The quicker Romo is let go of the better off we'll be because that will put an end to all the speculation and show that we're 100% committed to Dak. Once Romo is traded or released we've officially moved on.

Romo will take a pay cut if he stays in DAL...... there won't be a choice in the matter

The most they may do is add some Games Started incentives but his base will not be 14m

I think an open competition in training camp is different than a mid season switch.

In this scenario both guys are willing competitors and the practices would reflect that high intensity. And both guys are going into it willing to be the backup if they lose the job. And both guys emulate romos team first attitude of last year and play backup with a smile. And that it's a long season and they may play anyway.

I love Romo, wish this could happen and would love for an open competition between the two, not to mention the security of having two good QBs on the roster.

That said, Dak's play in 2016 made Romo's salary cap hit in 2017 unwarranted. Even if there is a drop off from Dak to Romo, the team (and I along with them) feel Dak's play at QB is perfectly competent as a starter, with a chance to become dominant and elite. They can't justify the cost of Romo.

They could. How much might a decent backup cost? I honestly don't know but if it's much at all, they could easily make an argument to keep Tony if they decided to IMO.

He will compete for a starting job... somewhere else, promptly break something in TC or preseason, then go on to flawlessly carve up the first team defense while running the practice squad, and all the while fans of said team cry that he isn't starting.

FIFY ;)

Terrible idea. It's over. It's over. More accomplished QBs have been let go. What is with this fanbase? I loved Romo. Stood up for him for years. Insisted that he was the LEAST of our problems. But he has won TWO....TWO...playoff games. We are not cutting Peyton Manning here folks. We are not cutting Brett Favre here folks. We are not cutting Joe Montana here folks. I brought them up because I believe ALL 3 were let go from there original teams. And all 3 were WAY more accomplished than Romo. And all 3 went on to play in their conference title game/Super Bowl with new teams. These guys were on a much higher level than Romo...and proved it when they went to there new teams. This era of Cowboy has been so bad...that we are in fear of letting someone go that has won 2 playoff games in 9 years?

Your post belongs in a different thread I asked a clear direct question about the Cowboys management of said scenario.

Individual players don't win playoff games.

Favre never won a playoff game. Manning never won a playoff game. Their teams did.
