What in the world will they do with Jaylon Smith?

Did they change the rule about cutting guys and designating them a post 6/1 cut? In the past you were able to do this with 2 (I believe) players

His salary for 2022 becomes fully guaranteed on the 5th day of the league year, which is in March. They can't designate him as a post-June 1 cut given those circumstances.

Why? Rams did it with Gurley right? The designation is for cap purposes only. Has nothing to do with the guaranteed date of the 5th day of the league year

Cox? You mean the guy who's played almost exclusively against people who won't be on an NFL roster in a month? Neal had one good play in the last game, but he's been up and down in camp very similar to Smith.

Cox and Neal has made plays given their opportunities. What has Smith done during his opportunities? Nothing so far.

Well at least Diggs and Joseph look very good.
Way too early for Joseph no? If anything I’d say right now I’d think about a mulligan from what we’ve seen although it’s obviously an incredibly small sample size and I’m not too concerned at this point

Nope, Joseph has a shot at starting as a rookie.

Neal and Cox haven't been anything special thus far. Jaylon is still useful when used properly, he's just not worth the $. He'll be here all season and see meaningful snaps throughout. He'll be gone before the 2022 season.

Jaylon is useful in marketing. Not so much on the football field. Too physically limited. LBs are the TEs of the DE. Their position inherently has to fulfill multiple roles. A physically limited player is just going to get himself, and the defense, exposed.

Even with just *one* role, Jaylon can't do it. Can't run defend because he can't anchor. Can't pass rush because he can't drive. Can't cover because he can't run or cut. There's really nothing he can do on defense.

I hope he wins the job because he plays well the rest of the offseason and not because he is the default choice over another rookie and a few JAGs. I do like his aggressiveness

This. Except his marketing advantage is torched as well.

What he put himself through to play in the NFL is indeed remarkable.

The extent to which he sucks today is equally so. He's garbage.

He is winning the job and the secondary and the entire defense is greatly improved over last season.

Not enough people understand ALL of this!!!! He is useless as a NFL player. If he is trotted out their on opening day as a STARTER..that will tell fans all we need to know about how SERIOUS Dallas is about winning. It will also tell us who is in charge. Because any FOOTBALL person that puts him on the field....should be fired. The only person that would start him....is the GM. Who happens to be influenced by the Owner.

Jaylon just may be the most expensive reserve in the league.

That's totally incorrect. It absolutely saves them money. If Jaylon is cut before the 5th league day next year his dead money is $6.8M because his base salary won't be paid . If designated a post 6/1 cut his 2022 cap hit will only be $2.6M (plus another $4.2M in 2023)

If they don't cut him his 2022 cap hit is $11.8M and on top of that there is still another $4.2M from bonuses to hit the cap in future years.

2022 cap savings by cutting Jaylon can be as high as $9.2M if a post 6/1 designation or a savings of $5M if he is just cut with no designation. Either way they save a lot by cutting Jaylon next year

It's crazy how far our LBs have come since last year ended. We have Parsons looking like he will be well worth a top 10 draft pick and perhaps a steal at that. We have LVE looking like he will be close to playing like he did a couple of years ago, we have a vet guy in Neal who looks like he'll excel in the nickel and a rookie in Cox who looks to have the skill set to be one of the best nickel LBs in the league. Then we have Jaylon who looks worse than ever and makes more than all of them combined. Let that one sink in...
