After seeing the ridiculous money Stafford just got, what can Dak get? Let's assume the following:

Dak wins three playoff games in the next three years, and is top five in the NFL in completion percentage and TD's. He is clearly a star player. What will Jerry offer? What would it take to keep Dak happy?
That's a big assumption. Let's see it happen and Jerry will take care of him. Unless we trade for a boatload and start Cooper Rush. ;)

I am more worried about Cooper's contact when the first one ends... We are talking about Hall of Fame back up here.

Franchise tag for sure.

If Jerry is smart, the franchise tag is very avoidable. When QBs that were first round picks come towards the end of their deal, they can push for max money, because worst case scenario, the final year of their deal is probably worth $10-$15 million if not more. With Dak, he's going to make like $600k in year 4. Financially, it makes far more sense to take $25 million, even if the going rate is $30 million, just because you get a raise of $24.4 million right away. If Dallas doesn't budge of $25 million but then gives in after the season, you gave up $24.6 million right away, in exchange for $25 million spread out over 5 years and are a year further from free agency. Major loss there, it's why Seattle was able to get Russell Wilson for the price they did.

You can criticize Jerry's football acumen, but if there is one thing he knows about, it's money.

And that includes the time value of money, which is what you are referring to. Jerry will get a deal done when the time is right.

To be honest, when comparing the time value of money, it probably means we should get a savings of more than the $5 million per year over 5 years that I used as an example. Anyone can make the right decision of excepting $24.6 million now over $25 million over the next 5 years, it gets harder the more you lower that $24.6, but there is absolutely no reason to pay any QB as the highest paid, when they are set to make less than $1 million dollars.

If Dak strings together good/great years throughout his first deal, then like all these others guys, he'll set the market.

If so, why didn't Russell Wilson? He won a SB and went to another, and had good numbers.

The key is, assuming that Dak continues to play at a high level, we would HAVE to get the deal done after the 2019 season. After 2018, Drew Brees *may* exceed Stafford's deal, he may decide to save the Saints some money to improve else where at this point in his career, but we'll see. Kirk Cousins could as well, because like Stafford, he hasn't won a playoff game, but I see him coming in a tick or so below, if he hits the market. Winston and Marriotta are two big names that will be free agents, but their teams have the 5th year option to play with. Matt Ryan, is the biggest and will exceed Stafford's deal, just a matter of how much and Dak's, Winston and Mariotta's agents, likely would not extend their client until after Ryan signs a deal.

But in 2020, Aaron Rogers, Russell Wilson and Ben Rothlisberger will all be free agents. Rodgers and Wilson will exceed what ever Ryan signs in 2019, and that is likely to push the value of the top QB to $30 million or beyond. Assuming he's an elite QB, then Dak's third deal is when he should set the market, just too much leverage to not use.

The downside to having an outstanding draft is that you have to re-sign all these guys at the same time. If current career projections continue, how do you sign the following players:

Dak
Zeke
Maliek Collins
Anthony Brown

You can add Rico and Jaylon if they become good players as well.

That would be a massive cash outlay and a huge salary cap issue.

NOTE: If you give Zeke the 5th year option, you can re-sign him a year later which may help. But still.....

Thankfully, it's a problem for another day.

Bye, Zeke

I think everyone is way too concerned about what he is going to cost. Lets see how he does this year and the following year and then decide. Geez, who give a rats arse about what he is worth right now. He's under contract for more then this year. Even Russell Wilson played another year or so after he had won the super bowl under his current contract.

Rothelisburger will be retired in 2020. Why folks are thinking about what he will be worth then is beyond me and why would be concerned about Dak's third contract when he hasn't even signed the second one yet?

I forgot what I was going to say, but I felt strong vibes of agreement...

......similar thought diff. angle........Say C.Rush show's very strong progress, actually becomes a competitive situation.......Dak on a 4 year contract, Rush as a UDFAon a 3?.............contract year for both in same year............something gonna give.

It becomes Trade value for both .....vrs.........contract demands for both.........something is gonna give way. Nice problem to have........

If I see another season like last year, Matt Stafford money, which is scary with a salary cap.
