What is it that makes the Eagles such a perennial powerhouse?

Eagles are a good team.
Bot when McNabb goes so does Andy.....

And think of it ths way.

Do you really think McNabb can get you to a Super Bowl.
Then win it?

1) Stability in the front office
2) Stability at the head coaching position
3) Signing young talent to long-term contracts
4) Drafting well
5) Satan*

* Also explains how I've survived here for so long.

Stability with the head coach, quarterback, defensive coordinator and front office as a whole really defines that organization. McNabb gets a lot of grief for his NFC Championship Game failures, but few present-day QBs have a resume that can match his.

All that, plus they do a great job of drafting, don't let their key players get away and know when to let the long-in-the-tooth guys walk.

Oh yeah, Westbrook being one of the game's most dynamic players doesn't hurt.

You hit the proverbial nail on the head RainMan.

It's hard to understand how the Eagles can achieve their high level of excellence and league wide domination year after year. So it got me thinking... how on earth do they manage to do it???

Some would say it starts at the top and has to do with coaching and we need look no further than the Jolly ol' Andy Reid and the fake Jimmy Johnson. While other may argue that it's the way they take such great care of their loyal players by awarding them with best in class pay before their contracts are up.

Those reasons are probably valid... but i think there is more as we pull the green shower curtain back... like maybe their unwaivering dedication to provide the team with top flight pro bowl caliber wideouts year after year? Of course we cannot forget about their gritty, durable, tough as nails, teflon don qb who handles the media with such grace and dignity? Everyone knows that McNabb is championship ready at anytime! He also has one of the "freshest" end zone dances in the league which he has honed to complete perfection after all of these years of numerous TD celebrations.

Some may even argue that it is their beautiful, state of the art, open, fresh air "family friendly" stadium facilities in lovely, clean, Philadelphia complete with plastic bottle service. More likely though would be their loaded-to-the-brim, juggernaut roster with numerous weapons on offense that most people refer to as "Westbrook." Last but not least would it just be that gorgeous, gleaming hardwood trophy case. While there aren't any trophies yet - all real Eagle fans know that it's "just a matter of time" before that case gets jam packed.

Anyway you slice it - this juggernaut is built to last.

.

when was the last time they were a "powerhouse"??? 4yrs ago?

mcflab has NEVER been great. He was very good for a while.Might be pretty good this season.
Look at the years that Philty was making it to the Championship games. THe NFC was pretty weak back then. They were in the rright place at the right time. Now there are real teams in the NFC and they are where they belong- borderline playoff team.

I would say a big advantage they have is that they're not always changing coaching staffs and such. They've had the same QB for a long, long time, the same head coach, DC, etc. This helps them out a lot, in the long run, on being able to know what they need, for their schemes, and such from year to year.

League domination? Uh right, they haven't been a super bowl contender since 2004.

I think the problem is that our team gets stronger every year but it just doesn't seem to help when it comes to playing the Eagles. They just match up well against us for some reason.

3. Star players at QB & RB on O.

2. Consistantly good coaching from the head coach who has had incredible longevity there and the DC who is very good...both have given stability...players, even average players get better and better when the system is not changing.

1. The front office....this is the main thing. Win or lose, they stand behind their coaches and their star players...no knee jerk firings and hirings...the front office provides what most players need to excell, stability. And they do a great job of using the draft...everyone hits and misses, but Philly has a plan and they stick to it...they keep drafting OL and DL. If you keep your OL and DL strong, the other players have less pressure on them...that OL, along with Westbrook, is why when McNabb is injured, they've still had some success.

Footnote...these are the same reasons the Pats won't fall apart without Brady. They are playing a backup QB who never started at USC in college...he's been a strong armed backup since high school, playing behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinartt in college. But you watch...they'll still go at least 9-7.

the bottom line is Jimmy Johnson and their aggressive defense. Before TO got to Philly...they were not that explosive of an offense....but they still won. There defense created turnovers, there defenses dictated game plans BEFORE the game even started. Heck the Eagles used to win by 3 TDs with Donovan not even throwing for over 150 yards. Agressive defense leads to turnovers, leads to short field, leads to teams falling behind, leads to making a team one dimensional, leads to more turnovers......rinse, wash, repeat.

As much as I HATE the Eagles, let's give credit where it's due...

Quite simply, their FO-they not only draft well, but under Reid's/Heckert's philosophy, they utilize the draft to prepare for their (far)future, which is why they rarely go out on a spending spree, in terms of FAs, that is.

After their last SB, that team, especially their D, just got old. But nonetheless continued to use each draft to prepare for their (far)future.

So ultimately-when one window closed, they were able to open up another. Cowher was able to do the same thing while in Pitt.

And, of course, they have the luxury of not only being able to hold onto Jim Johnson(he's too old to get a HC gig) and have Brian Dawkins. Without either, they would be mediocre.

That pretty much sums it up.

Also, as much as people love to hate McNabb, and yes Philly has done alright in his absence, he shows you how important stability is at the QB position. Just having a top QB makes you able to win with servicable skill players.

I also don't think Westbrook got nearly enough credit until very recently..Yes they used to have Staley in the backfield..but I think much of their longevity these days can be attributed to the fact that they have BW.

We haven't had this good of an offensive line in a decade. Philly lives and dies by the blitz, and they were usually damn good at beating our OL with their blitz. Then throw in the fact that up until we had Romo, we had very supbar QB play.

Bledsoe threw away the first Eagles game in 2005. And he was probably the worst type of QB to play against Philly.

Not to mention that even though we showed improvement under BP, our D hasn't been as good as it is this year, and we never had the QB.

Yeah the iggs r a joke. They had 10 years of the nfc east being a very weak and unstable division. They went to 1 superbowl and choked/puked it away. Like most igg fans used to tell me I will give all igg fans the same advice "stop livin in the past"

Some good and honest opinions here. I'm so tired of being beat up by the Eagles. I hope we put an honest butt whooping on them. Not injure just beat up and send home discouraged.
