We were bad at every phase of defense and the only positive that came out of that game was Demarcus Lawrence..

Anyways..

Stopping the run was the #1 issue yesterday. If we can't stop the run then it's pretty much game over for our defense. We were #1 against the run last year so hopefully McClains departure didn't hurt us that much.

The quick passing was the next thing we couldn't stop..

IMO, the linebackers looked lost trying to cover in the middle of the field and then our DB's gave them whatever they wanted in the flats.

Yesterday we needed more Damien Wilson on the field then Jaylon Smith. I know Jaylon is playing good against the run but Lee was lumbering around out there trying to cover and Jaylon was even worse.

I don't know what we are going to do against any team going forward that has a stout run game and an efficient quick passing game.

There is no answer for the defense. You just have to hope the offense picks it up and covers up for the defense going forward.

The defense still can't rush the passer and they are depleted in the secondary, a secondary that frankly wasn't very good to begin with when you had Nolan Carroll starting.

Play ball control offense, get the secondary more experience, get back our suspended players who were not good enough to be retained by their original teams, but are starters or big time contributors here, and draft better. We cannot afford to miss even though we drafted low this last draft.

I consider yesterday's performance an anomaly. I expect the team to improve next week and continue improving the remainder of the season.

They got kicked in the mouth early this season; for that, I'm grateful. They can respond or they can quit. We'll see.

The answer is pretty easy to answer, a new defense!!

Agreed.

To over-react after one butt-kicking early in the season vs. a good team in their house... Well, I'd give it some time.

I say bring in Rex Ryan and let him mix things up some as a DC. can't be any worse than what we have now. but this would probably have to wait until the off season to learn the schemes. so Rod is it baby....

I would say that it's an anomaly in the sense that even our bad defenses didn't get torched like that. And in that sense, it's hard not to improve next week against a weaker Cards offense.

But the bigger issue is that once again, the flaws of this defense that we all claimed was what was holding this team back from making a SB run were on display yesterday - poor coverage and suspect pass rush.

I think people are wishfully thinking that somehow those flaws are going to change any time soon. I suspect the secondary will play a bit better when Scandrick gets back and Carroll is off the field, but I think this defense is going to show itself to be pretty similar to what we had last year.

Which gets back to the point that the answer on defense isn't really the defense. It's the offense. They are going to have protect the D just like last year.

We need to get rid of this cover-2 garbage, we don't have the d-line talent to execute and our secondary is equally as inept. Our corners kept playing 10 yards from the receivers in every snap and Simian killed them with all the comeback/out routes and slants.

Nothing wrong with Rex...except he's like not a JG friend...

Offense has to help out the defense. We did have 2 takeaways that lead to both touchdowns. If we can't run the ball were not going to win many games.
