What is the answer on defense?

More talent up the middle. Our DTs are garbage players. Nothing more to say there. Jaylon Smith can't shed a block to save his life, he's been out of football for 2 years, and both of our safeties suck at tackling. Heath just shoulder charges, and Jones doesn't want anything to do with the play. Barry Church sucked, but at least he would come up and tackle.

I don't think Heath is that terrible. I think he's ok.

I actually think we have a solid group of talent on defense but my gosh they can't keep getting beat on the same play over and over.

Heath is OK, as long as he doesn't have to play anyone man to man or come up and make a tackle. He can play a deep half as a safety, and that is about it. He's extremely limited.

DT needs to play better. Collins has been disappointing.
Get Scandrick and Awuzie healthy.
Replace Wilson with Wilber and then Hitchens when he comes back. His lack of range and tackling have been poor.
Drill tackling every practice until it gets better.

Time.

Time for the young Secondary to heal.
Time for the young secondary to gain exp
Time for the young secondary to gel and work together.

Time for the Injuries and Suspensions to be done with in the LB and DE corps.

Time for the defense to actually tackle which for some of them it seems a bit of an anomaly as Lee is normally a sure tackler but he was missing on some last night that cost us.
Time for Jaylon to heal and grow as a player.

I'd bring in Revis and Daryl Washington right now. One, it's after week one so their contracts would not be guaranteed. Two, both are currently unemployed so their asking price should not be high. Three, they are more talented than current players at their positions. Four, and most importantly, it sends a message that no one's job on defense is safe. They better step it up or they will be replaced.

It's not going to happen because it would be an admission by this Front Office that they were wrong, and I'm convinced that this current Front Office prioritizes appearing clever over actually being good.

We were bad at every phase of defense and the only positive that came out of that game was Demarcus Lawrence..

Anyways..

Stopping the run was the #1 issue yesterday. If we can't stop the run then it's pretty much game over for our defense. We were #1 against the run last year so hopefully McClains departure didn't hurt us that much.

The quick passing was the next thing we couldn't stop..

IMO, the linebackers looked lost trying to cover in the middle of the field and then our DB's gave them whatever they wanted in the flats.

Yesterday we needed more Damien Wilson on the field then Jaylon Smith. I know Jaylon is playing good against the run but Lee was lumbering around out there trying to cover and Jaylon was even worse.

I don't know what we are going to do against any team going forward that has a stout run game and an efficient quick passing game.
The tackling more then anything else was a back breaker yesterday IMO. Too many times early on the Broncos kept drives going by breaking tackles and getting to the sticks. It really sapped us.

I was very concerned that the Dline got blown off the ball yesterday. Everything they did worked. However, had it just been them I would be worried. But the whole team played like crap. Which shows me that coaching and preparation is what lost this game....nothing more.

Fire the old man, bring the D to the 21st century.

I have a feeling that if the team underachieves this year they will scapegoat Marinelli, and Garrett gets another year of on-the-job training.

I also think they will just replace him with Matt Eberflus which accomplishes nothing.

Don't expect to beat a better team. The Broncos can be beat but when you expect to do it, they'll punch you in the face and make you earn it. The Cowboys didn't react well to being punched in the face and so they lost.

What I want to ask is .. in about 3 years we built our OL. Since the last piece of this wall it's been 'what?' 3 drafts?

Why are we not able to build a defense? I know we were 5th on points allowed, 1st against the run, but I want a dominant dooms day defense for the love of God!!!!!! we seem to keep missing on defense draft picks and end up with dudds

Yeah the whole thing was bad.

There were guys just sitting in the zones too .

I can't help but to think Hitchens and Scandrick were severely missed.

Three things that I thought really killed us on D. Broncos controlled interior DL, piss poor tackling by LB's and DB's and we got thin quick in the secondary.

When 1 gap attacking style doesn't work against the run or the pass, you switch to 2 gap and pick your spots to attack. Would not be ideal with the personnel, but would hold up against the run and weaken the pass rush further.

When a game like that happens you need to get back to fundamentals on defense.

The first day of practice should be nothing but defense 101 to the point of insult.

Pretty much along these lines.

This defense is dependent upon disruptive interior players, and Safeties and LBs that can fill and tackle.

We got none of that yesterday.

But I guess you get what you pay for, Maliek Collins is the only interior DL we've drafted in the first 2 days in like what? The better part of a decade?

It baffles me that a team who understands the need to invest in strong Offensive Line play completely neglects the defensive equivalent.

Games are won and lost in the trenches, on BOTH sides of the ball.

New coordinator who can influence drafts for better talent and a better scheme. /thread

A cover specialist like Daryl Washington at LB would have come in handy. He was also a good blitzer and had great hands for INT.

better talent will help better coaching will help more it is what it is for this year which is not going to be very good
