It's not about the money they have next year, it's about the money they'll have in 4 years because good players want long contracts. The Broncos offered Leary a 4 year contract. By that time the Cowboys will have to pay Prescott big money, Zeke big money and they'd have no room on the books.
This was of course before Zeke's fall from grace and before his future became a lot more uncertain.
That’s the way it goes same with every other team. They have about 10 million in cap space for this year right now. They could’ve kept Leary. They felt they had his replacement on this team. Holy moly
