What would it take for us to sign Freeney or Dumervil?

Just wondering what the coaching staff would have to see in OTA's and training camp at RDE for them to say that Lawrence, Taco, Tapper simply are not enough to pressure the edge, and that we need to sign a designated 3rd down rusher like Freeney or Dumervil? I know this is not our style, but if we get past the first 3 preseason games and Lawrence is not the same player he was in the 2014 postseason, and Taco and Tapper look like rookies who will need a full year of experience before making an impact, would we go that route if it meant a consistent RDE edge rush on 3rd downs and Aaron Rodgers and others having to at least worry about their blindside? Come tomorrow, we will have Romo's cap space to play with...

So who do we cut to free up a roster spot? I don't think coaches will come out and say our young guys aren't getting it done. Unless we are losing like 5 games in a row because of our lack of pass rush.

I don't want either.

Benson Mayowa had the same amount of sacks as Freeney and Dumervil last season...combined.

Last thing this team needs to do is bring in a stop gap player to limit the reps of our young guys. We aren't talking about premier pass rushers either...we are talking about older players past their prime.

My favorite comment.

Dumervil was hurt and Freeney was playing part time. If you watched the playoffs and Super Bowl closely, Freeney was a beast. We certainly flirted with Demarcus Ware and I believe would have signed him if he did not retire. I think there is a place for a veteran guy like this who can provide a consistent 3rd down pass rush from RDE, and mentor of our younger guys.

You'd have to pay those guys more money for close to the same production as what the cheap, young guys can give you.

I'd rather just roll with "upside" than kick the tires on "old guys". Now, if there were a legit pass rush threat out there, I'd be all for it. I just don't think Freeney or Dumervil is an answer.

Don't think they would sign either.

They would go with a cheaper unknown guy who they view as having some upside like they did with Mayowa, Irving or D.Moore.
Maybe so. I think we've already made that signing in D. Moore. I don't think any young unknown with his talent level is going to be available before season, so hopefully he puts it all together.

I think if we got into the season and the line wasn't producing it would be considered. Until then, I think the coaching staff want to give all of these young guys every chance to produce.

I understand the thinking, but a rookie will always be a rookie, even in his 2nd year, if he doesn't get an opportunity to make those rookie mistakes. If not this season, eventually the Cowboys are going to have to put them out there. We may as well get it over with this season, in my opinion.

Granted these are from 2015-16, but I just don't think anyone on this roster can duplicate this right now. I hope that I am wrong and D Law, Tapper, Taco, or Moore shows this ability.

Unfortunately, during the season will be too late because these guys, at the latest, will be signed after Week 1 to non-guaranteed contracts.

Probably so, but I don't see us being desperate enough until that point.

We signed Moore as a young veteran presence. We spent our first-round pick on a pass rusher. We've got last year's fourth-round pick who was apparently looking good before his back issues last offseason. We have a couple of younger players who flashed at times and could be due to show more. And we have a player entering a contract year who looked to be on his way to becoming a star before his suspension and back troubles.

With six DEs we likely want to keep (Moore, Charlton, Tapper, Irving, Mayowa, Lawrence), we'll give them every opportunity to prove themselves before moving on. Now, some of them also will spend some time at tackle, but that's a lot of ends to carry.

Why would they go get Freeney a year older when they could have had him last year. Yeah, he had a good SB, but had 3 sacks all year

I'd raid other teams practice squad before bringing in those guys, and only if it is out of necessity because of injuries.

Because Freeney is still a known name.

We get these tired old posts every offseason about bringing in some old known name with little production to back them up.

OR we want to bring in some punk that was in trouble so we can get him cheaper and they still wind up being a punk that does not help us but hurts us more in the end ala The Kracken.

They tried to make a play for Old Fire Cracker Fingers in the offseason and it did not pan out and I would be willing to bet that was the only one they were willing to go big, in their minds, on this offseason.

Maybe if someone else is a surprise release from a roster they will jump but I think they are set for now minus someone like we discussed earlier.
