What would it take for us to sign Freeney or Dumervil?

Because Freeney is still a known name.

We get these tired old posts every offseason about bringing in some old known name with little production to back them up.

OR we want to bring in some punk that was in trouble so we can get him cheaper and they still wind up being a punk that does not help us but hurts us more in the end ala The Kracken.

They tried to make a play for Old Fire Cracker Fingers in the offseason and it did not pan out and I would be willing to bet that was the only one they were willing to go big, in their minds, on this offseason.

Maybe if someone else is a surprise release from a roster they will jump but I think they are set for now minus someone like we discussed earlier.
If they got the gnats to overpay seven fingers then that was a shrewd move on their part.

Except the Cowboys did exactly that. They brought in a punk on the cheap hoping he's finally going to get his stuff in order.

Do you now know the history of Damontre Moore?

And let's kill another myth uttered in this thread.

If the Cowboys wanted to bring Freeney in, no, they wouldn't have to pay him significantly more than some up and coming youngster or some young reclamation project.

Freeney made $1MM this year. Compare that to Moore, who we are paying $850K, I believe, or Mayowa, who has a base salary of $1.5MM this year.

We paid more for the Kracken and he did not pan out.

We paid less for more and it still remains to be seen what happens with him.

Agree...All on this board should know that the Cowboys aren't interested in bringing in high dollar older vets. They are looking for bargain players who only want look-see contracts. Stephen & McClay are running the talent acquisition program now.

How many sacks did Mayowa have last year and how many sacks did Freeney have?

Just curious.

Dumervil was hurt and Freeney was playing part time. If you watched the playoffs and Super Bowl closely, Freeney was a beast. We certainly flirted with Demarcus Ware and I believe would have signed him if he did not retire. I think there is a place for a veteran guy like this who can provide a consistent 3rd down pass rush from RDE, and mentor of our younger guys.

I didn't see Freeney beasting at all in the playoffs. He did have a sack in the Superbowl, but that was it. In three playoff games he had 1 sack, 1 tackle and 1 assist. That is not a beast. He did not provide a consistent 3rd down pass rush for the Falcons last season. He had 3 sacks with zero coming in the final 10 games of the season. Demarcus Ware is better and 2 years younger, which is why Dallas probably at least considered him as an option.

Just addressing your point about how people either want overpriced vets who don't work out or young punks on the cheap that don't work out.

Well, the Cowboys are doing something you seem to be criticizing. Bringing in a young punk on the cheap.

It's like some fans on here don't follow the team they claim to be fans of. It's mind boggling some times.

Not really applicable to my point. Someone mentioned that it would cost a lot more to bring Freeney in over some young and up and coming project. Note the word "if" in my post. "If" the Cowboys wanted to bring in Freeney, no, he wouldn't cost a ton.

It's false that Freeney would cost us more than someone like Moore or Mayowa.

Yes...I did not say I was not criticizing them for it.

Just as if we would have drafted yet another Pot Head like Gregory.

That's false.

If it cost more per sack it is not.

Money for production.

Ware probably would have cost a lot more than Freeney did as well.

Laugh if you want.

Most teams will pay a younger guy a tad more for production and upside than they will a veteran who is just wanting one last pay check with little to no production to back it up.

I'd rather go young. That's what we've been doing. Drafting well and resigning our own. Not any other castoffs to big contracts.

Well, there was that Ware guy.

Which again does nothing to disprove my point.

Someone (actually I think a few people) said you would have to pay Freeney a lot more money than an up and coming DE or a young reclamation project.

That's false. Freeney made $1MM last year. That's it. It's about what we are paying Moore and $500K less than what we paid Mayowa. So again, saying that one reason we shouldn't sign Freeney is he would cost a lot more than a young project is likely false.

I'll put it another way. If people are listing the reasons to not sign Freeney then it would be acceptable to say you don't want him signed because he's old, probably not very good anymore. All acceptable reasons. One dumb reason to say you don't want Freeney? That he'll cost too much. That's false.
