What would the Cowboys get if they traded Zack Martin?

By Shan & RJ and Bobby Belt, 105.3 The Fan

The Cowboys are digging their heels in with Zack Martin, as the disgruntled All-Pro guard remains away from the team.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said Tuesday on the K&C Masterpiece on 105.3 The Fan that he has 'no idea' if Martin will miss regular season games. And he and his father, Jerry, appear to be unfazed by Martin not being in camp right now.

Hypothetically, if things got uglier between the two sides, should the Cowboys consider trading him, and if so, what could they get in return for him?

Nothing at this time of year.

Any team that wanted to pay LT money to an OG would have signed an expensive free agent this offseason.

During the season, some contending team will have OL injuries and therefore much more likely to give up a decent pick to resolve the issue.

He'll want a new contract from the new team...

It's obvious to me that Jerry isn't entertaining ideas of trading Zack Martin at this juncture. He seems "dug in" with that idea, by all appearances.

This is exactly why the cowboys needed to draft Torrence the guard from Florida. He would have been martins replacement and they could offer him for a trade. but noooo! They had to draft a one legged 25 year old tight end.

I would say you can get a second round pick. Realistically and I would take it in a heartbeat.

Ohhhh this is a good thread.

What's better than "what will we get for a washed up Running Back?" thread you ask?

Answer: "what will we get for a soon-to-be THIRTY THREE year old GUARD thread.

Rarely...RARELY do you draft a 22 year old guard with a 1st round pick,, even if he's one of the best guard prospects in last few years, because guards, running backs, and off ball LBers simply don't have a huge impact on the modern pass-heavy NFL game. And that's for the very BEST guard prospects who have their whole careers in front of them! 21 or 22 year olds on cheap rookie deals!!!

So I can't wait to hear how many 1st round picks a 33 year old guard, at the tail end of his career (yes i know he could be good for another year or two), whose looking to break the bank, is going to fetch us.

Seriously.....if you made a post on this thread (I haven't read them yet) and u said something about a 1st round pick (or any Day 1 or Day 2 picks) hurry up and go delete them before you get ousted as a doofus. This is as dumb as "zeke should get us a 1st round pick" posts late last year.

Lol. Do we even have a back up for Martin. So it’s a hard no for me. Honestly I am still wondering why we let Looney go. He was cheap enough. Left with jg and looked around at giants and retired. He wasn’t ready to retire and was getting better.

Analytics, my friend, analytics!
We all love Zach Martin and his great play, but how many actual wins does a HOF right guard rate over an above average right guard? Probably none. Zach Martin brings us pride in having one of the best RGs in the league, but it’s among the 2 least important positions on the OL. Unless a playoff contender is a solid RG away from the Super Bowl, no one is giving a first round pick for him.

There are plenty of very good, solid RGs in the NFL who make about half of what Zach makes annually. He will come to camp soon, but if I actually wanted to trade him, I’d swap him for an above average RG from a team desperate for a veteran presence….but I don’t think it would be easy.

I really don’t think there are many, if any, teams anxious to pay an older veteran OL 15-20 million per year to play RG. If Zach was all about the money, he should have transitioned to RT several years ago when that was a weak spot for us.

Those saying a second or third are probably in the ballpark, and it would need to be to a team that is close to a Super Bowl. For those saying guards aren't worth anything, the best way to disrupt a passer, even a great one like Brady, is pressure up the middle. There are some teams that would be interested, although the giving him a new contract part is going to make it that much harder to do if we really wanted to. I would expect Martin to come into camp before too long.
