Whats the advantage of having Bobby Carpenter in the game over an extra Db...

Everyone has their opinions but I thought his strength, according to the coaches that work with him daily, was his coverage skills. Guess they were wrong.

When it's 3rd and long, wouldn't an extra DB help us match up against the TE? I know Bobby Carpenter made a nice play at the end of the game, but I'd rather see someone quicker covering the TE/RB/etc on obvious passing downs.

Great Point:bow:

Whatever our defense is doing and whoever is in there, seems to be working the last 2 weeks (two shutouts back to back) . Enjoy it !

I'd rather see Alan Ball cover Celek than Carpenter. Carpenter is horrendous.

I take it back. Some appear to be brainless so I guess the BB in the boxcar doesn't fit.

It is painfully obvious that Carpenter just doesn't have the skills to play in the NFL as a LB. His strength is knowing the right coverage and where to be. The problem is he just doesn't have the speed or strength to get there.

It's his last year here. He will be gone next year.

I agree that on 3rd and long or other abvious passing downs, I'd rahter take my chances with Butler, Octavien, Williams, Watkins, Mike Hamlin, Ball, etc.

False. I challenge you to find a linebacker who is going to be able to cover TEs man to man.

...I'll wait

FWIW I think either Hodge or J. Williams will take that spot next year...actually I think those two should be our nickel LBs with all of that speed.

Celek is a good TE first of all, many think he should have gone to the ProBowl over Witten; anyway the reason he had a big game is because Maclin and D.Jackson didn't.

They can play Rowdy for all I care if we keep pitching shutouts.

FWIW I'm very excited about the prospect of moving on from Barbie and welcoming one or both of these two young talents into the fold.

Carpenter is a NICKEL LB. He's not part of the dime package when we have seven DBs. There are well known packages that call for certain players having certain roles.

You can't put a small DB at the nickel LB spot most of the time. You need a LB there to play the run as well as pick up backs out of the backfield and at times cover the TE. There are times when you can pull that LB and put a DB there and we do that already just not very often.

Carpenter's strength is to run fast and cover. He's played well at that role this year. In fact he's in the game more now than earlier in the year as we at times play him and the others in the nickel package on more than just third down.

We have perhaps the best D in football right now and Carpenter has a well defined role on a very successful unit.

Brent Celek put up some beastly numbers for a TE this year... 76 rec., 971, yards, 8 TD's.

And he's the same guy who turned around Champ Bailey last week for a long TD.

With Philly's speed on the outside, it's pick your poison. Someone's gonna be left one on one and we chose Celek.

On the contrary, Bobby Carpenter has been playing very good. He is very dependable in his package role. He got another half sack today, and made a couple of very prominent and important tackles today. He covers ends and backs well.

Let's not kid ourselves here. He fell into that half sack in his typical soft fashion. I can't wait to see what our young LB can do in the offseason.

To Mr Jobberone and his veiled criticism... You can place a stout Safety (possibly Sensebaugh in the current defense) or any other LB with decent cover skills and speed in that same nickel position and harbor zero memories of Barbie. Please don't make it seem as though he is some irreplaceable cog in the defense... He will be gone next year if either of our two young LB prospects steps up. So he should enjoy his last few moments in the best role the coaches could find for our 1st round drafted Nickel LBer...

No, he shot the slot as he does when his number is called, and got to the quarterback fast enough to be a factor. Don't kid yourself...he has skills and even if a mob out just to tar and feather a person, doesn't make their appraisal correct. Bobby was getting some real praise for his play in the post game interviews and programs as well. No one is going to mistake him for the Raven's Lewis, but he is a good package linebacker. He's not afraid of contact and has been very active this year. Don't play around foolishly by saying from a middle linebacker's position you get a sack by being a tool. Those situations are called by Wade Phillips himself...another person who got bum raps and proved theirselves as well. Go figure...and after a win some 'fans' have to even find someone to cheap shot and ridicule. Hey, very mature....

Wrong. Watch the play again. He was the third guy to the QB on that play and fell into a sack by default for being in the vicinity. YAY...

I give credit where credit is due. The defense as a whole is playing very solid ball right now. Carpenter is a cog in that defense so, by default, he gets some praise from all. Don't fool yourself into believing he is not replaceable.

I'm no Carpenter supporter by no means. But you guys have to be realistic here. Only a Pro Bowl caliber player, whether it's a CB/S/LB would be able to handle Celek by himself. Celek would push most DBs around and is simply too agile/fast for most LBs. The guy is a tough cover for any defense, particularly with the way we're doubling on the outside leaving the middle wide open. You have to concede something as a defense.
