What's the minimum you'd take for Romo?

I think we all want a 1st. BUT there are a lot of factors in play. Romo's cap # and the fact he absolutely wants to start means he 100% won't be back in Dallas. Jerry will make sure Romo gets to start next season. NFL GMs know this. If there is no team dead set on acquiring Romo, GMs will choose to wait out Dallas releasing Romo. Chances are there will be 2-3 teams interested...the level of that interest will determine compensation to the Cowboys. My guess is a 3rd rounder, maybe a 2nd if we're lucky.

Romo's cap number is irrelevant. His contract is relevant, but his salary is reasonable.

They can't pay a backup QB 14M so in reality they'll have to take what they can get.

If Sam Bradford can fetch a 1st round pick, then anything is possible.

I agree what your are saying might be a possibility, but I am not as convinced that we won't keep Romo and continue to let things play out. We could sure use the cap space, and we could also use the draft picks, but I am convinced we won't give him away.

Dead-Money is irrelevant when there is a net gain in cap space from dumping his salary.

They gain 5M in cap space if Romo is traded or released.

I wouldn't call it irrelevant. It may not be the over riding factor but it's not irrelevant.

I agree the cap space would benefit us. But if Romo goes, so does the Cadillac insurance policy we have at QB.

One last thing ..... Jerry probably won't be enamored with the thought of giving away Romo and having Romo come back to haunt us for a late round pick. He won't want to be viewed as the guy who gave away the franchise if Dak eventually hits the wall either.

There is a buyer for just about anything. The Cowboys should be patient, keep their powder dry, and see what the initial 'feelers' tell them about the market for Romo's services.

If they can off-load much of Romo's contract AND get a 3RD or higher- they probably ought to make that deal. Romo can do things most NFL QBs can't, provided he can stay healthy (and THAT is obviously the big 'IF'). There will be bidders. I guarantee it.

He gave us everything he had.
Your assuming he would automatically give us a high pick. Also your assuming this high pick would be the difference in us getting multiple superbowls and us not making it. I don't think it works like that.
You speak of the cap savings but don't mention that trading him vs releasing him doesn't change the cap number enough to make it a factor.
You say you love Romo but then say "it's time for Romo to actually give us something of value which is a nice draft pick in return for letting him go somewhere and play". Doesn't sound like a fan who appreciates Romo.

This lack of loyalty and class will be felt when you are hoping your next free agent or potential free agent will sign with you and leave a few dollars on the table. Players see Romo get screwed over and they will put themselves in his shoes when negotiating with you. Players like Lael Collins appreciate Jerry for the human he is and may not feel the same when they realize he turned into a heartless person.

I believe treating people the respect, kindness, and class pays off in the end. You just want a draft pick I guess.

We can agree to disagree.
you do realize Romo hasn't been on our roster all these years pro bono, right? So we should release him, let him walk and the Boys absorb his remaining contract? Then he can re-up with another team and we get zippo in return....wow, I'd like to work for you! All this Romo sympathy is amazing, the guy has the world by the throat. Disappointment on how his tenure here played out I can understand but pity to the tune of millions is a bit much

You would like to work for me....
But more importantly other players would like to work for Jerry Jones.
There are plenty of good reasons to treat your franchise QB the right way.
You see money as an acceptable excuse to crap on a guy. Other players respect seeing other players treated with class and this will do more good for your franchise than any draft pick you gain by screwing over your players. In my opinion of course.

not seeing any crapping on Romo in my response. Just think millions of dollars are at stake as well as helping the future of this team. It would be easy for anyone to judge what JJ should do but it's opinions I guess

saw a recent article on BSPN (I know consider the source right) that claimed to quote some NFL exec saying that Romo should only fetch a mid round pick in an offseason trade because he's old and broken. This made me think that I'd prefer to keep him if that's the case since a good backup is hard to find. He'd have to take a large pay cut which he may not agree to but a single midround pick just seems way too low to me.
I accept that we may not get a first round pick out of him but I think the minimum I'd take is a second plus at least a fourth but I really want a 2+3rd minimum.
What say you?

The best you could get for Romo would be a 3rd or 4th round pick and maybe a conditional late round pick based on how many games he's able to play. He's suffered too many injuries, causing him to only play in two full games the past two seasons and no one knows where his game or health may be. He's had three different back injuries since 2013 and carries a huge risk for any team that brings him in. Any team that signs him is going to need a contingency plan at QB in the event Romo goes down. He's lasted only two games the last three times he's seen the field so any thought of someone forking over a premium pick for him is out of the question. If no one offers a trade for him he'll be released.

He's not going to take a big pay cut to be a backup and he's not going to want to waste what little he may have left in his career being a backup. He's not going to be happy being a backup and he and Dak will not be able to coexist after this season. Romo didn't lose his job due to poor play, he lost it due to injury. We have to go into next season with our QB situation settled with no controversy or distractions. It's not a good situation to have a backup who's not happy being a backup and wants to play. A backup has to accept their role as a backup and most realize there isn't any good opportunities for them to start and are happy they still have a job.

Romo isn't in that position he can still play at a high level (we assume) and wants to start and they'll be opportunities with other teams for him to start. You could see the unhappiness in his face and you could hear it in his voice when he held his press conference announcing this was Dak's team. He wants to play and try and accomplish his goal of winning a championship and Jerry will give him that opportunity by releasing him if no one offers a trade. Romo will not be a Dallas Cowboy after this season. Sanchez could be back as the backup next season or it could be Kellen Moore. The Cowboys could possibly look for another veteran to backup Dak.

I would take whatever would get the most of his salary off the books.

I hope he retires and helps coach this team to multiple superbowls.
