The 1975 Cowboys because it was the most unexpected Super Bowl appearance.
The 1975 season was supposed to be the beginning of the Cowboys rebuilding and it was.
The Cowboys went 8-6 in 1974 and missed the playoffs for the first time in 9 years. Mel Renfro, Leroy Jordan, Dave Edwards, Ralph Neely were all 32 or older. Bob Lilly, Chuck Howley, Cornell Green, and herb Adderly had retired.
All the preseason pundits were predicting a losing season with a 3-5 year rebuild in their future.
However, a 4-0 start changed a lot of minds. their first two games were against eventual division champions Rams and Cardinals
The excitement was put on pause when the Cowboys lost 3 of their next 4, including George Allen's Washington team.
However, the most important game of the regular season was the rematch in late December. The winner would go to the playoffs and the loser was eliminated. Washington opened with a 10-0 lead in the 1st quarter. However, that was all the points they scored as the Cowboys won 31-10.
The Cowboys did not win their division, they were the wildcard team back when there was only one per conference. This meant that they had to open the playoffs against the most powerful team in the Conference., the Vikings. The Vikings were 12-2 with 9 Pro Bowlers and 5 1st team All Pros, including terh previous year's MVP, RB Chuck Foeman and HOF QB Fran Tarkenton.
The Vikings had the #1 defense and they were #1 against both the pass and the rush. Nobody gave the Cowboys a chance, but our quarterback said a Hail Mary at the end of the game and the Cowboys won.
