When to give TO a contract extension?

Between the two, I would be he gets cut after this season over him getting a 2 or 3 year extension anytime soon.

There is no rush to extend T.O.s contract. If it happens it will probably occur right before or during next season and I doubt it would be more than a year. I don't think it will happen. I think he just plays out his current contract and that is it as a Cowboy. I even lean a little toward him getting cut after this season.

Methinks you may have said a bad thing there.

I can't go top 3 pick at RB without him being a dominant guy who can carry the rock 25 or more times if necessary. I'm anxious to watch him this year.
this why you aren't a GM

But he is willing to be patient and evaluate him over time before the draft. Is that a bad thing? After all, who among us IS a general manager or could ever be one? Just saying.

Okay - so you said TO had 3 one year contracts.

Once proven wrong you now say okay, he really didn't have three one year contracts, it's just that his 3 year contract was kinda like having 3 one year contracts.

In other words, you admit you are just making stuff up as you go and then trying to adjust and explain it away when proven wrong.

There are differences

First, a three year contract sets out everything for THREE YEARS (imagine that).

And second, the big difference may be that with a 3 year contract there is a bigger signing bonus, and there may also be other guarantees or buyouts if the team doesn't keep the player the full three years, so the player gets more guaranteed money than if he had three separate contracts that only kicked in after the previous one expired.

You are missing the point of the thread and the idea. No suprise there. Going into contract detais when you know what I was talking about.

Yawn... I am getting sleepy.... naptime :lmao:

T.O. is playing like a 23-year old WR, the man keeps himself in GREAT shape, so a two-year extension isn't out of the question...

I know what you were talking about, and I had a legitimate question - which is why would TO sign three separate 1 year contracts?

So far all you have done is blow smoke and make false statements while avoiding the question.

We have him for one more year.......we need to draft a solid wr in this next draft.

That's right now.

Between today and the end of training camp in '08, a full season and a postseason (which hopefully will included a Super Bowl appearance) will have passed. That could involve a lot of wear-and-tear which he doesn't have right now. If he were 24 at this time next year, Jerry Jones wouldn't have to think twice about the extension, but he will be 34 instead.

As General Manager, do you automatically consider extending a player at his age after next season before this season has even been played? That's the question.

IF the guy is producing 1,200+ yard seasons and double digit TD's then I'm all for an extension...

Fair enough.

I am too. Except ..........

Right now TO still has another year on his contract beyond this one, so there is no hurry. We don't yet know how he will hold up this year, must less next year, and at his age we cannot have any clue about years beyond that.

Let's get through this one. If he is successful then we can choose to keep him around in 2008 and start working on an extension at that point (1-2 years at the most).

why would we want to extend his contract when he is already signed thru next year?

EXACTLY.

If he were younger it would be one thing, but at his age banking on his abilities too far into the future is foolish.

If he does very well this year then we might want to start looking at the possibility of a one year extension, but that's for down the road - not now.

Here is some food for thought also...

T.O idolizes Jerry Rice.

He said one of the biggest thing he learned from Jerry wsa how to take care of your body, as it will prolong your career.

Rice caught 92 balls for almost 1200 yards when he was 40.

I'm not saying T.O is Jerry Rice , but.. its not unrealistic to believe that him being is so particular about what he puts in his body and how he keeps his conditioning up that he cant play at a high level until he is at least 36.

I would re-up him just not for 25 million.. Unless of course he improves again on his play and desire this year.

Make no mistake about it , he is playing for an extension and will say/do all the right things this year.

Regardless, I hope he plays well because my popcorn is ready again....

I think iIf he puts up double digit TD seasons for each year that he is here then Jerry will give him more than one year.

I don't recall Rice overdosing...hmmm... ;)

IF one is given, I think it'll be after this season, before his next roster bonus is due. At most, I think only a one-year extension should be given.

Similar to how they did AG. He initially signed a two year deal, got a one year extension w/some guaranteed money. If TO makes it out of TC, then he'll get the rest of his salary.

Makes sense to me.
