This is a great thread. I don’t know what the answer is.

What I do know is they will never figure it out.

If once again the Cowboys front office chooses this off-season to go the bargain basement route in free agency to enhance their roster, what does it say about their thinking? What is their logic? Which of these phrases is most true?
  • A. They honestly believe “their way” (despite all the evidence of the last three decades to the contrary) is going to somehow win a championship.
  • B. They really don’t know how to build a roster that can compete for a championship and know it, but don’t care enough to change or just hope they get lucky.
  • C. They are completely delusional and believe their own PR.
  • D. All of the above.
At this point, I believe it’s either B or C.
You?
E. They are not trying to win a SB. Their goal is to make the playoffs and if they happen to get lucky to go far then cool but they are content making the playoffs. They would prefer to win at least 1 playoff game but not winning that game does not change their philosophy.

The jones family, or maybe just stephen I don't know, have come to the conclusion they do not need a SB to maintain Cowboys dominance in the sports world. 27 years has proven that. But what they do need to some degree is to sell hope. What sells hope? Drafting good players, check. Win regular season games, check. Make the playoffs in back to back years and win a game, check. Losing to the same team twice in the playoffs and 0 coaches fired, just expiring contracts and the 1 change is they let KM move on so they can score less points. They are so afraid of going all in because they refuse to have a down cycle year like many expect the eagles to have or like the rams had last year and this year selling off high dollar assets for nothing. That is all they are worried about.

They bought into their own bottom dollar philosophy.

lets just face it jerry been reading the idiots guide of winning and he just keeps looking at the pictures. His way of roster building is in the 1980's type and that's not gonna det the team close to any championship much less a super bowl and 27years is in the proof. the only way this team under his leadership and hamburger mike is to buy tickets to the super bowl and that way he's assured of getting there. and god for bid his boy takes over it will be same old same with tighter belt on spending

People blame Dallas's failures on the Jones placing profit above winning. This is nonsense. JJ is old, and a few more $million doesn't mean anything to him at this point. He wants to win.

The Cowboys are a hobby for him. Playing amateur GM is fun, and he can afford it. While he doesn't value money over winning, he does value his own enjoyment over winning. He prefers being in the limelight with a microphone in front of his mouth, over handing control to a real GM.

Gotta look beyond one year.

It was the last 5-6 years where we failed. Think about if we have Hargrave, Wagner, Alim McNeil, Fletcher Cox, and some others on this team. What if we had taken Kelce instead of Escobar?

That's why what Jerry does is just so bad. Those terrible draft choices add up. Right now, Kelvin Joseph is hurting us badly. It was a very stupid pick. Those type of picks hurt a team for years. And we don't have a saavy enough GM to overcome.
We draft as well as anyone in the league and better than most . No team hits on every pick but CB especially we’ve done really well
Awuzie, brown, Lewis and Diggs are all good to great picks

Archer tweeted don’t expect anything.

Gehlken tweeted don’t expect anything

I’m once again not saying break the bank day one. But at least sign a few starters at WR, CB, LB. But we know they won’t
Lamb and Gallup are your starters,
“Instant gratification“? How about once every 28 years or so?
Silly me, I forgot about all those SBs we won those years we signed Ferguson, Ayodele, that guard from GB that never played a snap, Glover, Kosier, L Davis. Hell, multiple posters on here saying all we got to do is sign Carr… instant contenders. Two years later, I can’t count that high, same people calling Jerry a bunch of “dumb MFs”. Again, this team isn’t a player or 2 away. Signing 30yo receivers in rapid decline and 1techs to 20m average contracts isn’t going to change anything but put us farther away!

Andy Reid has just become the Bill Belichick of today. He stays in front of his players. If he lets a player go...don't sign him. But Kansas City and San Francisco takes the investment free agents, but in return, Dallas doesn't beat either come the playoffs.

Before Jerry bought the Cowboys, he studied San Francisco and learned. Jerry Jones simply needs to go back to the bank again...

It's all of the above.

They believe they're doing the right thing, but have proven over time they don't know how to build a complete roster. And they are extremely delusional because they're still adamant that they are doing a quality job.

If you look at their cap situation, the team's window was 2-3 years ago. This past year was tight and despite what people say, this one will be bad too. IMO, they aren't even trying to win a title at this point. The goal is to cobble together a competitive team and to their credit and my surprise, they were able to do so last year.

They obviously aren't going to say this because they like fan interest and stadium revenue.

Next year really opens up again. I kind of get the impression that they are treating this year as a bridge year. If they ignore free agency next year, I have no idea what to say.

E. They know the current method isn't for winning it all, but it wins enough in the regular season to sell the product, keep interest, and remain profitable.
Exactly this. Anybody who honestly believes the Jones’ are doing everything they can to win a Super Bowl are insanely delusional. The Jones’ Super Bowl is when they see the bottom line at the end of every season. And their goal is to do just enough to keep that bottom line with as many 0’s as possible.

Dude you’ve called me a troll and told me to stop posting already this week. If you have a serious point to make to disagree with my opinions, I welcome it. But the dive bombing insults you throw down are not only silly, but bordering on violating the rules you agreed to follow here.

So either say why you disagree, or offer a different opinion. But lay off the insults. I think you’re better than that.

What FA signing last year would have made us better than the Chiefs?
I’d say none
Probably true. But it’s not about one “splash” signing. It’s about the construction of a roster that can compete for a championship. Not just get to a divisional round every 4-5 years. Maybe we couldn’t beat the chiefs, but how about working toward beating the niners or the eagles? That should be do-able. Because let’s be honest, the teams we had in ‘21 and ‘22 weren’t as good as the niners or eagles.
