Aikman ran but I would not say he did it because he could more like he did it because he had to at times. It was his running and desire to hold on to the ball until the last minute in the face of a blitz that cost him about 2-3 years more in the NFL.

On the flip side Staubach ran and his career ended a bit early because of concussion as well in the end Iwant a QB who can make all the throws, who is accurate and is passionate about winning.

It is a way down but it should not be a way down.

Clone Kaepernick and you have it.

I hear ya. But these mobile QBs have yet to win a Super Bowl. The last few I can remember that have won it all are all pocket passers (Flacco, Eli, Rodgers, Brees, etc.)

Well I look at this as the BPA, if he's mobile thats just a bonus.

One thing though, if its truly a running QB, you will want to draft a running QB about every 3 years or so......you can't have a running QB with nothing behind him either developing or ready to play cause of injury (which is why what the Skins did was smart). A pocket passer gives you the opportunity to develop other positions cause the likelyhood of him being injured is less and his career will be much longer. A running or mobile QB might have a shorter shelf life, but the options he can give a team can't be denied in the running game, play action, and especially empty back sets (something not enough teams with running QBs use, it would be deadly).

A very mobile QB brings alot to the table, and it shouldn't be ignored how much his mobility can help the run game and the versatility of the offense. I always hear that no running QB has won a Superbowl.....well that will fall sooner or later now with them finally being accepted in the NFL, and I have a feeling it will fall then the flood gates will open with mobile QBs winning it a whole lot.

Great thread. I always favor the pocket passer who has enough mobility to make some plays outside of it, but you have to keep an eye on this new brand of QB and see where it goes. If the league is truly changing, you don't want to be the last to know.

I would like a QB who throws but can run if he has too instead of a mostly runs and has to throw on occasion.

And no matter how you frame Johnny Football...I say I want a QB with a good head on his shoulders who is not an idiot like that kid is.
This team gets enough drama, I would be ten fold with Johnny and it is high enough all ready. So to anyone asking if we should take him that would be a resounding heck no from me.

Basically you want another Tony Romo, BP.

I agree.

I not so fondly remember the time Jerry & Co. thought they needed a "Randall Cunningham" type of QB, which isn't far removed from the type of QB you cited in your post.

Until I see one of that type of QB win some SB's I'm not convinced.

Steve Young won SB's and he was a mobile type QB..

Huge difference between a "mobile" and "run-first" guy.

Steve Young was very mobile, but he was a pocket passer first and foremost.

Montana was mobile to a certain extent.

Look at Rodgers... He'll scramble for a first down but he's a pocket passer.

A pocket QB is more reliable. I think when we are down to a 2 min drill in the 4th, we need a QB that can make the throws to take the team downfield. I want to count on a QB's arm; not legs.

A late pick, game manager. Let the team that is being built around him win us games.

Young won "one" SB and was the only so called "duel threat" QB to ever win a SB. He had one of the greatest games I've ever seen from a QB when he played for the USFL's LA Express. He passed for over 300 yards and rushed for around 180 yards.

When Romo's day is done I want a versatile QB who can pass from the pocket and make plays outside the pocket similar to what he does. The duel threat QB isn't a fad that's where the league is heading. It's critical you have a QB who can pass from the pocket but with the speed of defensive players and all the schemes designed to presser the passer you have to have a QB who can avoid the rush and make plays outside the pocket. I want a QB who can bail from the pocket when it breaks down and extend plays. A QB with mobility/escapability creates all kinds of problems for a defense just look at Kaepernick last Sunday.

On any given Sunday he could put up 400 yards through the air or 150 on the ground. In the playoffs vs the Packers last season Kaepernick accounted for 444 total yards. He's the blue print for what I'm looking for in a QB. You're not limited to a specific type of offense with a QB like that. If you're going to pick a QB of the future you want a versatile QB not one who's limited to the pocket. We're seeing more and more great athletes at the position who can throw as well as they can run that's the QB I want for the next 15 years after Romo.

I couldn't care less if my QB can run. I mean, it's a fine attribute, but I care far, far more about pocket-passing ability.
