We know that there's a "new" emphasis on running the ball, and that's great to hear. But what we really need to see is a change in the attitude on how we run the ball. Most of us know what Adams is going to bring in terms of his zone schemes, but there is so much more involved when it comes to the of concepts involved with zone blocking. Lineman have to be athletic enough to get to the second level, to reach and pull, quick to trap and be able to get out on the edge. TE's / FB have to be able to block, but more than that they have to be able to "reach" their designed point of attack. So much in zone depends on giving false reads to the defense and pulling them out of their lanes allowing for designed cutbacks. The WR's have to handle their blocking duties and have the desire to come down hard on a DE or LB (Maybe that's one reason why MM didn't run too much outside zone? Maybe that is why the trade was made for Mingo?) When we lost Noah Brown, we lost that physical presence in our WR corp. Don't be surprised to see Mingo on the field more.
A good zone RB has to have good vision to see the cutback lanes, have quick feet to be able to cut back, be able to read and anticipate the blocks, have patience to allow for the blocking and lanes to open, have some burst to get to the second level but also have to physical ability to make something out of nothing. Having an RB who can run a 4.35 isn't the biggest requirement, sure it's nice, but being consistent and to keep the chains moving is more important. To demoralize the defense by keeping them on the field with 5/6 yard gains time after time, to physically wear them down, to mentally break them. But most of all to be able to do it in the last 5 min of a game.
Skattebo and Giddens would form a nice duo...then sprinkle in a little Deuce here and there to shake things up.
