Keith Whitley, hands down. Had one of the best voices this world has ever seen.

Maria Callas had the greatest voice I've ever heard. Elvis could sing anything from gospel, opera, soul, jazz, whatever although I wouldn't call his voice angelic. Roy Orbison supposedly had 3+ octaves and I'd call his voice as angelic as a man can be.

Hmmm. If I could sing like Michael Buble' um, well I'd be fine with it.

Fairly unheard of guy, but his name is Kurt Nilsen. He was discovered via Norwegian Idol, and went on to win the World Idol over Kelly Clarkson.

His voice is simply amazing. So powerful and so talented. He covers a few U2 songs, and improves them, which says a lot as I'm a huge Bono fan.

Just amazing.

Here is him and his band singing Hallelujah. It's a really fantastic version, but his voice blows the others away. He's the 4th to sing.

He does his own songs, and has a pretty strong country sound to him. Here's his cover of the Gambler, if there are any Kenny Rodgers fans.

Had my iPod on shuffle this morning and it made me think of this thread. Kate Bush followed by Olivia Newton-John, both of whom I mentioned previously, but then right after those two, and worthy of mention here:

Crystal Gayle
Darlene Zschech

Why the dual barfing smiley then? Check some of 'em out. Many a songbird among those named, male and female singers alike.

MUST ... OPEN ... MIND ... (j/k, sorta) ;)

so when I get to Heaven and the good Lord says I can only listen to one singer's music for the rest of eternity it would be David Phelps.

If talking "voice like an angel" - Alison Krauss - Karen Carpenter
Best Female voice would be Pat Benetar or Aretha Franklin

I would feel gay if I said a male had a voice like an angel, but when I think of smooth voices I think of old country singers like Jim Reeves and Ray Price.

Not one mention of Anne Murray. You should all bow your head in shame. :)

Anne Murray says her claim to fame was that she turned down "I Honestly Love You" that Olivia Newton John made famous.

My step daughter mocked me when I married her Mom in 1990 because of all my Anne Murray Records and tapes. (no such thing as Cds in those days) Anyway, I play her CDs in my car now with my grandson (her kid) and he loves listening to her. Payback!!! The only 10 year old I know that likes AC/DC, KISS, Anne Murray, Abba, Elton John, and the Gaither Vocal Band all about the same. -my work here is just about done, I can die now ;) except I had nothing to do with AC/DC or KISS.

Female

Karen Carpenter - in a class on her own.
Sandra Ann Lauer - the voice of Enigma
Sarah Brightman - as good live as on cd
Dido - I would!
Stevie Nick - no list would be complete without her

Male

Nat King Cole - as smooth as it gets
Ray Charles - almost, but not quite Nat
Ronnie James Dio - great rock vocalist
Peter Gabriel - The Musical Box is one of my fave songs of all time
Bryan Ferry - very slick

In the male category, the first one that came to my mind is, as mentioned already, Freddie Mercury. Second was, as also already mentioned, Roy Orbison.

Female, I'm surprised no one mentioned Mariah Carey. Or maybe I just missed it. It's pretty hard to beat her range and sound. She's the only human I know of that can actually speak "Dolphin", lol.

The other lady I think of automatically is Allison Krauss, as also already mentioned, lol. One of the sweetest, most beautiful voices I have ever heard.

Leann Rimes is another angelic voice. Have to give her a mention, too.

And another female vocalist is Charlotte Church. She is opera, but dang, truly angelic voice. She is a prodigy, was just like 12 years old when she made her first record. Apparently, she's become quite the potty-mouth, with a brazen attitude to match, but there is no denying the sweetness of the gift she was given.
