The most popular sushi styles do not involve raw fish. You could go into a restaurant and order tons of items that did not have raw fish

Unless the fish has been heated up to an internal temp of 160 degrees or more it's raw and I'm not going to touch it.

I like sushi, but I stick with the cooked kind. I'm too scary to try the raw kind. I'm sure it's delicious, but no.

That said, I like all the varieties of the cooked sushi.

I don't know that there is anything to be scared of.

Fish, raw or cooked, is far safer than cooked chicken, beef, or pork.

If you are worried about the fish having gone bad, I'd be more concerned about that with a cooked item as cooking often hides or masks the smell of bad fish -- you can't hide it when it is raw.

What did I just write....

Again, the most popular sushi items involved cooked fish/shellfish. Crab is one of the most popular ingredients and that is rarely eaten raw

Of all the sushi restaurants I have ever been to 90% of the menu includes raw fish so I think it's fair for people to think of raw fish when sushi is mentioned.

I don't think sushi is something you can just jump into though. It's best to start slow and have the non-raw rolls like a california roll. Then jump into a spicy tuna or spicy salmon. After that become a little more adventurous with other rolls. Then jump into sashimi.

I have been trying to get my parents to try sushi but it just won't happen. I felt like I succeeded when I talked my mother into trying the ginger that comes with the sushi and that's not saying much.

Would you ever try this...

It's seared tuna, sort of like a rare steak. It's very good and gets you used to the texture or consistency of raw fish.

That's just nasty. It needs to finish cooking.

I wouldn't, but that's because I wouldn't eat anything that raw or just looks overall bloody.

lol i'm not going to try and shove the idea of sushi or raw fish down your throat. it's your decision. but, a lot of people think raw or medium steak is nasty or looks nasty until they taste it. the same applies to the tuna steak in the photo. it's your life though.

You really do need to come visit me in Alaska. I will take you to some sushi spots that will blow your mind. You will love sushi by the time you left. :D

I kid you not. I do it all of the time. Many friends who hate sushi come out w/ us and we turn them from the dark side. Now its..

"When we going to get some more sushi...." :D

I could be wrong but I don't think the color of that tuna has anything to do with blood. I think that's just the color of the fish's flesh. The blood line of fish is usually a dark purple, almost black.

If you're ever feeling adventurous and willing to give raw or semi-raw fish a try that's a good dish to try(seared tuna). So is a spicy tuna or spicy salmon roll.

Raw meat is not really something I want to try, no matter how prepared.

I love fish, especially fresh fish, but I'm not going to eat it in its raw form

Nothing turns my stomach quicker than to cut in to a steak and it bleeds all over the place.

I hear you. Listen, I tried steak tartare once and will never have it again. It was disgusting. I wanted to spit it out right away. There are just some things people don't find appetizing. There's no harm in that.

Sushi done right is just great. It's satisfying without feeling stuffed too. I understand the raw bit, if you think about it it's sort of gross, so I don't think about it and just eat it. :D

Japanese food - at least American variety that I get - is great overall. They have some of the best noodle soups and appetizers.
