Who Will Be Our Leader on Defense?

Obviously Caleb, but also Overshown and/or a guy like Gary….and of course Clark and Q are vets.

I think there’s a decent chance this finally all comes together under this DC. They’ll at the very least all be on the same page. Not sure how any younger player was supposed to thrive in last years defense.
I agree brother I think we have some real talent on the defensive side of the ball now

It's going to be up to our new coach to fast track the chemistry into a cohesive unit that uses that talent like a runaway train to crush our opponents.

I'm anxious to see if one of our veterans steps up and makes this his team in the past we've had too many mercenaries that were just out to get paid and really had no loyalty to the team or anything but getting a contract

@Blackrain

Forgot to use the quote….

All true. The last part is yet another Jerry problem. He thinks he is motivating players by giving them examples of all the big contracts he has given out, and how they can have that too.

He has admitted this. There’s no wonder why most around here are like that. He think it’s about individuals. Far from it. You cannot accumulate enough of that at once, and even if you did, it’s not sustainable.

But hey, don’t tell Jerry how to motivate. He thinks he is great at it.

Vocal leader I think Q may be the guy. On the field probably whomever starts at MLB for now but Downs has a good shot of earning that role for the next 4+ years.

It could be just me, but I am getting Micah vibes from Overshown.
I kind of agree although injured he has been a cowboy for a little bit and I think he is just chafing at the bit to prove himself and get something going on here.

I wouldn't be surprised if he took and more vocal role in the defense this year

If he can just stay healthy he plays with that reckless abandon and sacrifices his body that make people want to play above their heads and give that extra effort

I’ve been waiting for ppl to turn on him with his contract yet talk etc…but that just seems to be the nature of fans

We have a new coach for the defense and obviously he will be the leader off the field.

But who was going to be the force on the field that galvanizes this group together and makes them want to walk through the fire in tough moments.

Leroy Jordan Randy White Charles Haley.
Who do we have on this current roster with the talent and personality to motivate these players on the field when things get tough.

At this point I got nothing nobody's even been a cowboy very long to have established any type of presence.

I think it's important to have a leader on the field just not sure who's going to step up and do it.
I’m hoping CP is the leader and the face of the defense, Ala Dave Wandstandt (I might have misspelled that) was for the ‘92 defense. I like the no name defense that takes on the personality of the coach. I’m less excited about a single player being the leader or face of the defense because what if that leader flakes out or is a diva. Coming away from years of Diggs and Parsons being the leaders has me a little nervous about players taking over. And I’m not trying to start a Micah argument.

I hear you brother but we need some real leaders Micah and diggs they were mercenaries in search of the big contract and we're willing to sacrifice fundamental defense to enhance their stats and preserve their careers.

We need guys like Leroy Jordan Chuck howley Bob Lilly Randy White real leaders that care about winning a Super bowl

I doubt Caleb Downs will have any problems making his time with the C-boys a success. He's been a blessing to every college team he has played for. I'm confident he'll do the same for us. He'll be as good of a safety and helper that our players could hope to be with. He's known as a great leader.

For the time being, it'll likely be Quinnen Williams taking on that responsibility. We're in good hands.

I believe by the middle of the season, Downs will take over as the leader of the D! It's a big part of why they drafted him and if he's close to the player he's expected to be, it will happen seamlessly!

Safety Caleb Downs and LB Dee Winters

Expect vet LB Winters to be Green Dot signal caller . .

I agree, but it may happen sooner than we think. In the first OTA he was shouting calls at veterans. After an entire training camp, he might just have that level of respect.
You may be right. He’s an intelligent player so he’s gonna grasp the scheme and help others. That’s a great way to show leadership

Downs soon will be. They've been looking at him in a variety of positions other than Safety. He's been at LB, Nickel, and Punt Returner in OTAs.

I 100% agree. We need leaders and not pouters. I don’t want to sound like I’m bashing Micah but 2 things happened that completely soured me on him. One was the Netflix special that showed after the Green Bay game Jerry hugged Micah and told him it wasn’t his fault. Um excuse me, yes it his fault as well as the rest of the players on defense (and offense). Did Reggie White, LT, Haley, Bruce Smith ever need a hug from the GM after a playoff loss? Cmon. Where’s the mental toughness. Where’s the “I’m ticked off and won’t rest until we win again” attitude that “generational players have. Then him taking a nap did it for, that was the 2nd thing. Diggs confronting a reporter for a tweet he tweeted showing Diggs not trying hard. Again, where’s the mental toughness?

I know it’s a part of the soft culture that Jerry has established but mentally these guys were soft on defense during our 12 win seasons. They pouted a lot. More concerned with stats and contracts than winning.

That’s why I’m hoping we get a coach that is the face of the defense.

I actually think the opposite. Q is definitely a leader but I dont believe hes the most vocal guy.

I think hes more of the anchor that will lead by examples rather than vocally.

Now where i do agree is that , Last season there was no vocal leader and with that vacuum I believe Downs will fill it immediately

Q will back Downs play when it comes to accountability imo.....but its just a guess.
