Who will be the next RB, if any, to surpass Emmitt's 18355 yards?

Adrian Peterson won't come close to Emmitt's career numbers. Peterson has yet to stay healthy for a full college season. He runs very up right. I think Peterson will be a big force once he reaches the NFL. I just don't see him having a long career.

I think of any current players, Portis has the best shot. Ulitmately, I don't think he will end up with the record, but he has the best chance of any current running back.

I agree with you. I don't see Adrian Peterson getting it either for the exact same reasons. I definatly don't believe Portis will get it because his body is already failing him, as was mentioned earlier. No, I think it's LT or Alexander. If LT can get a 2K season, he's got a realistic shot. If Alexander has another 1800 to 2K, he's also there.

Interesting that nobody mentioned one Reggie Bush in this discussion.

Yeah, what's up with that? The man's only 18,355 yards behind Emmitt.

Alexander's way too old and too far away to have any realistic shot whatsoever. He'll be 29 before the season starts. He could have four more seasons just like he had in 2005 -- 1,880 yards -- and he'd still be more than 3,000 yards away and already 33 years old.

Tomlinson isn't quite as far behind, but he is 1,595 yards behind Emmitt at the same age and hasn't been as productive as Emmitt was.

Peterson already is 21 years old, which was Emmitt's age as an NFL rookie. Along with being one of the two most productive running backs on a per-season basis and his unprecedented longevity and durability, being is 21-year-old rookie is what gave Emmitt an advantage that very few running backs will have.

It's difficult to see him holding up for 3,600 to 4,200 carries -- which only Emmitt and Walter Payton have ever done (and possibly Curtis Martin).

Really? I didn't realize that Alexander was that far behind. I'd have to agree with you. It would be all but impossible. LT has an outside shot but he's really the only guy with even an outside shot at it.

Yeah, when Jimmy Johnson drafted Emmitt Smith, he turned to Jerry and told him, there RB position was now taken care of for another 5 years.

Imagin.

I think Emmitt's record is a really significant one and any back will be hard pressed to come close to his career totals. What Emmitt did was amazing. I know a lot of people like to discount his totals because of his Oline, but if you watched the man run, you know he was talented. He's probably the only Cowboy I liked to watch play.

I also wanna address those that said Portis is used too much.

If you look at the carry totals for the first four years of their careers, you'll see that Emmitt was used just a bit more that Portis. Portis' yardage is also a little slightly than Emmitts after 4 seasons.

I'm not saying Portis is on his way to besting Emmitt, just pointing out a little misconception.

All that being said, I can't wait to see what Portis does in Saunders' system.

its going to have to be a RB that doesn't take a lot of straight on hits.
Someone like Portis takes too many hard hits to last long enough to do it.
That was one of Emmitt's talents and the reason he lasted so long and relatively injury-free; his ability to avoid taking a big hit. Sure it helped to have such a dominant OL...but hey, Terrell Davis had an equally dominating OL and he lasted only about 4 decent seasons. That's the way it goes sometimes. I think I'll be a very old man when someone finally breaks Emmitt's record.
