Who do you think is primed for a breakout year this year who we could extend for a bargain price right now?

D. Murray is one of those guys. We could probably extend him now for a reduced cost now due to his injury history and his limited productivity over his career so far. With this line, it is possible he will have much better stats and success this year. He will have cleaner hoes to run through which could really improve his likelihood of getting through the year injury free. We could pay him an average starting RB salary, and end up with a guy with elite stats. I would make that attempt now.

Some will argue that the longer we wait the more it will cost us to extend Dez. That is also a possibility.

Some of the other mid-tier guys might fall into that class as well. What are your thoughts?

It's tricky with Murray due to his injury status. They extended Lee last year and got a small discount but now it looks like a questionable contract.

That's true. But keep in mind it was the offensive line that chewed him up and spit him out. Murray has that working for him.... while Lee had that going against him. This line could really allow Murray to shine. I think if they give Murray the rock he will have top 5 running back stats this year. He really is Adrian Peterson lite.

Didn't Lee have playing time incentives built in?

I'd extend Beasley.

I think Demarco expects a big year and will test the market. I suspect he's a goner, frankly.
The problem with not extending him is you have to commit a draft pick next year finding his replacement. Then you have to hope he is just as good as Murray.

I'd be looking at both Beasley and Harris. I think Demarco expects a big year and will test the market. I suspect he's a goner, frankly.

I agree 100%. I don't think most teams are extending RB's these days. That's unless they have an Adrian Peterson.
Beasley and Harris would be worthwhile small contract additions that provide value for the dollars. RB's can be found
in every round of the draft...I would also keep adding OL and DL at the top of the draft for several years to come. That's
how you can build a championship team these days!

To be honest, I'm not really a fan of extending prior to proving worth. It's bitten us more times then I care to remember. With Murray, I don't believe that's the case. I think he's proven his worth but having said this, there is really no reason to overpay him. Walker's proposed contract with the front loaded deal might be the way to go. I don't want to be in a situation where we are paying him big dollars in 4 years.

I'd probably extend Harris before Beasley. Harris is more valuable on special teams and has been a productive slot receiver too. Beasley has struggled a bit more as a return man.

After Dez and Tyron on O it probably would be Murray. It wouldn't be for crazy money but the incentives would be to automatically convert salary into guaranteed pay based upon PT/games played.

On defense, the only real person I'd worry about is actually a coin toss. Claiborne on one side vs Carter on the other. Not after I see them succeed after about 8 games or so.

You're not taking into account the cap savings by not extending him.

To me its real simple. You only resign long term the special running backs.

Is Murray special?

I think not.

Its not tricky with Murray. You don't resign him. That is destined to be a bad contract.

I agree that you don't resign him. He hasn't proven that his body can stay healthy for the whole season yet. I like Murray but to me unless you've got an AP or a LeSean McCoy you simply don't pay big money to running backs in the NFL anymore.

It's just not worth the money. If he walks then you draft another guy and move on.
