Who would you extend this year before they breakout?

That cools and all, until Randle become your #1.

Randle will be lucky to be on the team at 1st game. He's nothing special and likely to be the odd man out.
If we need a new RB, there are plenty to be had at bargain basement prices these days.

And? Does it matter if he becomes your number 1 because you refused to overpay for a RB who has had durability issues or if he becomes #1 because that RB you overpaid is out, yet again, injured?

The correct answer to this is yes that absolutely does matter. The first way saves you money on your cap to go and find someone better. The second puts you in cap trouble because you're paying too much money for a running back who simply isn't elite and isn't healthy regularly.

I'm not talking about over paying him. I'm talking about resigning a RB who had 1400 + all purpose yards and the best YPC in the NFL, despite missing too games. How much are you going to pay for that production in FA?

And I just LOL at people who think its a forgone conclusion that you can just go out a grab an RB in the 4th or 5th round and have them match his production.

Dwayne Harris, I would really hate to see him playing for another team he is a major factor in kick/punt returns, kick coverage & a very nice complimentary reciever. we'd need multiple players to fill all the roles he plays.

Like who? Chris Johnson, Ben Tate, Rashad Jennings, Knowshon Moreno were top FA Rbs this year. You think they're better than Murray? Cheaper? #1s?

Extending a RB past his first contract not named AP, or McCoy is Bad business

Or Jamal Charles, or Matt Forte, or Steven Jackson. If Murray is healthy he's top 8 in the league IMO. I attribute his injuries to his running style and not being brittle like Lee or Johnson.

No one said pay Murray crazy money. That would be the point in extending him now.

Correct. I believe he's been injured in two seasons for two different injuries (only missed two games last year). Physical RBs are going to have some injuries. Even the great AP.

You use that to your advantage in contract negotiations.

I'd be looking at both Beasley and Harris. I think Demarco expects a big year and will test the market. I suspect he's a goner, frankly.

I agree about Demarco. I hate paying running backs especially ones that aren't special big money. Demarco is solid and if he wants solid running back type pay then I'd look at it. If he thinks he should be paid like a top 5 back, I would pass.

I agree that you don't resign him. He hasn't proven that his body can stay healthy for the whole season yet. I like Murray but to me unless you've got an AP or a LeSean McCoy you simply don't pay big money to running backs in the NFL anymore.

It's just not worth the money. If he walks then you draft another guy and move on.
On the flip side, you might be able to get good value for him if you extend him now considering the injuries, and then if he stays even moderately healthy, like last year, you've got a pretty good deal at RB.

Yep. There's always an amount that's going to make sense. But you get the feeling Demarco is going to want more money than Dallas is going to be willing to pay given his age and the time he's missed. I expect we let him test the waters and only resign him if he can't find the deal he wants elsewhere. I think we like him, but RBs aren't all that expensive to find or to develop these days.

I wouldn't extend Murray until after the season... If it cost more $$$ than so be it, but you going to have to prove your worth rather than guess on your potential.

It would be different if he didn't stay on the injury report every year but he does at some point in the season.

I think it depends on our dedication to the running game. He did seem frustrated at times we stopped a successful attack more often than not.
