Who's packing heat?

Question out of curiosity... How many people carry because they're truly fearful of something happening to them vs. those who think it's just macho or cool to do so?

I know some people may be in dangerous environments where this kind of is necessary, but a couple of my friends have talked about it, and I don't get it. They have very mundane lives, don't live or work in a risky area, have never had any incidents happen, and they're fairly young, able-bodied guys. One of the guys is a big gun fan and the other has basically never handled guns but has watched too many TV shows and movies.

Frankly, if a burglar comes in my house, I think I'd have so much adrenaline that I'd do the job barehanded. Call me crazy, but I really wouldn't want to shoot someone in the dark whether I have the legal right to or not. And yes, I'm a good red-blooded Texas boy who was dove hunting when he was 10 years old or whatever.

Some of us carry for other reasons. I do because I am not going to let something happen to my family or to a complete stranger if I can help it. I'd rather die than allow a Jared Loughner to load another clip while I run away.

I guess it comes down to the person. I would never allow myself to second guess someone who just broke into my home and assume they are just for cakes and playtime, therefore me breaking out my trusty golden glove trophy's. What happens if they BAF? You know....BRING A FRIEND?

Most people coming into your home at night have other things on their mind than just a quick grab n go. Even if it is just a robbery, those usually go south in a hurry.

As far as carrying because it makes you feel macho? You should never be allowed a gun then if thats the reason you carry. Most of my friends carry because of comfort/peace of mind and being permitted to do so. If not, why go through all of the hurdles to get your CC?

I have been jumped 3x in my life. Once at around 2am at a stop light for no reason than to try and steal my truck and whatever else the hood could get. Situations happen and not all are the same. Being prepared isn't saying less of the individual carring the gun.

He is only prepared in a different way than you are.

Being prepared isn't saying less of the individual carring the gun.

Oh, I don't think less of people who carry. My dad is a big gun guy, and while he doesn't carry here in Texas, he has a house in Colorado and I think he sometimes keeps a pistol with him when he and my mom are up there. (Not sure but I think he said you either don't need a permit there, or maybe permitted carrying can be in the open.) But their house is outside of town and sort of isolated... And even more importantly, there are lots of bears up there. (I'm sure you know all about that.)

I've always thought that if someone breaks into my house while I'm asleep, one of two things are going to happen: Either I hear him and wake up where I can sneak around and grab something to hurt him with -- or at least stay out of the way -- or I don't hear him and he walks in on me while I'm still asleep, in which case it's too late for a gun anyway.

You're right, our soldiers are exactly the same as a civilian living in peaceful surroundings, and I think our soldiers in combat should go unarmed. That's exactly what I was saying.

This is a good question. In all honesty, I have pondered why I really need to do this. I live in a nice neighborhood, and have never been mugged. Nor do I go into neighborhoods that I don't need to be in. So if I was being totally honest with myself, I would have to say I got it because there is a bit of a macho thing about it, and just the feeling of carrying a gun with you.

I completely disagree with your adrenaline theory though. Keep in mind that the guy breaking into your house is going to have a fair amount of adrenaline himself. And you're hoping it is just "one" guy that works along. Either way, I wouldn't take a chance with my family's safety just on the hope that I would have enough adrenaline in my system to protect them.

Actually, yes many of them do. Most of them that do not carry a weapon aren't career criminals, but then all burglaries aren't committed by career criminals.

I honestly don't think any of that. If people want to carry just for the heck of it, that's truly fine with me and I don't think negatively of them at all. I just wondered how many people do it just because they want to versus those who are truly fearful of something happening to them.

I know some guys who keep a gun on their hip at all times, even at home. I guess they figure if there's a home invasion and your gun is in another room, you're screwed. There's a fine line between paranoia and preparedness.

That's a true statement right there.

I'm a mildly pro-gun advocate ("mildly" meaning I'm not out there protesting...).

But let's be real, there are guys out there collecting all sorts of guns, ammunition, et cetera, like he's preparing for the zombie apocolypse. It's kinda of hard for me to believe that some of these guys aren't daydreaming of a circumstance where an invader comes into their house just so they could unload on the guy until he's a puddle of meat.

I'm not saying anyone here is like that, but we all know or have heard of those types.
