Why are we always in the shotgun?

Because for the last few years we've had terrible pass protection and the shotgun gives Romo .3 seconds extra time before he has to spin move or get sacked again.

Ive shaken my head at this so much the past 5 plus years and I always forget to bring it up on here. I was watching NFL play book and Shaun Ohara asked the same question. What is Garrett's problem seriously? Teams KNOW 95 percent of the time it's a pass. Just like I said week 1, Dallas takes the joy out of watching football because they are so incompetent with basic strategy.

Ill be awaiting the first (go be a fan of another team) response.

They've been in much less shotgun this year.

All 3 of Romo INTs were from under Center on play-action passes.

DeMarco leads the league in rushing.

I think it was a veiled attempt to milk the clock and help keep our then 32nd ranked defense off the field. Injuries and poor execution foiled that strategy.

This year the playcalling is crisper but I think the premise is the same. Difference? Better OL. I wouldn't doubt it if we're amongst the top 5 in time of possession all year.

Guess what? We were running pretty well last year as well with Murray during the Green Bay game. Yet Garrett decides that he wants to pass and we lost. We lose about 2-3 games because of Garrett's blunders during the waning moments each and every year. He doesn't provide us with that advantages like other coaches do. Thus we are mired in mediocrity. Is 8-8 proof enough for you? Heck, if Garrett was such as good coach why did Jerry take playcalling duties away from him?silliness

Lastly, I don't know why people are giving credit to Garrett for building this oline. Last I heard it was Jerry who drafted Ty Smith and Frederick. Sure maybe Garrett had a say. But I doubt it since he was busy trying to sell us that Costa was an all pro waiting to happen.
so you think the coach should throw his starting center under the bus?

Good! Then I want to see another 40 carries from the RBs today.
I'll settle for thirty

I haven't got the feeling watching our first two games that we have used the shotgun excessively. Judging by our time of possession, the Cowboys "basic strategy" has been somewhat effective.

I like how the draw is coming back in style on the forum now, I remember when a lot of people hated it - and for good reason.

i love it...shoot...i run the heck out of it on madden even. whomever im playing ALWAYS thinks its a pass LOL

BTW, Garrett isn't calling the plays anymore. His body of work is now past.
The fork has already been put in it. The Cowboys are primarily dealing with the lingering effects of his crappy culture. His use of shotgun was many times predicated on no man in the backfield with no threat of run.

Hell, even last year it was mostly Callahan calling plays with Garrett's playbook.

Stats posted here don't reflect that or they reflect this year when he isn't calling plays and Linehan is running way more, meaning more threats of a run.

With Linehan, we already are using way more play-action, and I even saw a roll out on one today. The pass to Dez was on play-action. The issue right now is Romo's health.

Kind of conveniant to claim that Linehan's playcalling work cuts Garret out of the picture, but having Callahan do it last year doesn't. We are running well, in part, because we have been beefing up our offensive line, year by year. Do you really think that that is an old style Jerry Jones move?

It did cut him out if the picture, but your premise is incorrect simply we've had games in the past where we ran the ball incredibly well only to abandon it completely during a game or the very next game. This has been Garrett's tenure and he's been criticized for abandoning running, when they were doing it well.

And we actually ran the ball well last year, and most of that was because of Callahan. We scrapped the delay draw and our best run, was the sweep to Murray, a clear feature of Callahan. But Garrett also kept interfering last year per Jerry's own words.

Further, Garrett has no control over the running game these past two years. During Garrett's first six years coaching, we were running a pro-blocking scheme and drafting accordingly. His offense was predicated on that. We scrapped that and went zone-blocking.

Even with Dan Reeves, it was a clear case of Wade wanting to get a consultant to force Garrett to pay attention to the running game.

The simple reason we weren't running is because Garrett was an idiot and had no idea what he was doing.

Callahan is still in control of the running game and the blocking schemes.

Jerry Jones didn't allow Callahan to leave for a reason. He's always been a good coach as far as improving running goes.

The playcalling has been good and I love that were using more play action. Your right that this team is suffering from the lingering effects of bad playcalling for almost a decade. Its like when you remove a bad tooth your mind still plays tricks to think that its still there. Same with Garrett's bad playcalling.

If Sean Payton is such a good coach, why did Coughlin take the playcalling away from him?? We win two or three games during the waning moments each year because of Garrett's decisions. Sound familiar? I can do that too.

The Green Bay game was, absolutely, a mistake. They should have kept running. No issue with that statement, just the spinning of stuff to make the rest fit. You know, like Jerry being behind the drafting of first round linemen. Three times. Your take on the PR statements of coaches is kind of puzzling as well. Garrett isn't going to give up any divisive comments in his pressers. Been his style since the beginning. Everything I've heard says he keeps the heat on the players in private. Not on ESPN.

My opinion is that most decent coaches should have 5 years to implement their scheme. We are close to that. But only Jerry knows how many times it was Garrett who ended up causing the personnel gaff, or Jerry.....

Jerry was behind the drafting of Frederick. The draft boards had Sharif Floyd and Jerry over-rules based on input from Marinelli and Kiffen.

And this year, Dallas had three guys slotted before Martin, all defensive players. They were planning defense. They were all taken.

The philosophy of Dallas has been BPA. In the case of Travis, Jerry over-ruled the draft boards, thus the look of confusion in the draft room which has been reported, such as Blogging on the Boys. In the case Martin, he was the fourth best player available.

This wasn't a systematic plan by Garrett to get OL so he could run. The guy has been clueless.

And Sean Payton won a SB, which any argument is null and void. And his team has continually made the playoffs unlike Garrett. And he had a long coaching track record, meaning he learned from his mistakes.

Plus this five-year scheme rule is BS and fantasy. The power-blocking scheme of Garrett's offense was abandoned after five years.

They've been covering for his ineptitude for years.

LOL please don't compare Sean Payton with Garrett. Garrett is no where near the level in regards to coaching as Sean and he's still learning.

As for Coughlin taking away his playcalling....well it wasn't Payton's lack of knowledge of how to run an offense. But because his system was too hard for his players to understand. Funny you try and compare Payton's playcalling to Garrett because when Payton was here and calling plays, Romo and this offense was most effective and efficient. We saw an offense that ran bootlegs, play action, draws, etc. which continuously caught the defense off guard. Things started go to downhill when Garrett took over and implemented a vanilla, very predictable offense. We have squandered Romo's best years thanks to Garrett.

Garrett's playcalling duties was taken away because it was that bad. If you can't see if yourself how bad it was then I feel sorry for you. Even Jerry knew that it was time to take playcalling away from Garrett and give it to someone else with more experience.

Lastly, I don't know where you get this divisive presser thing about Garrett. I don't care about his pressers really. Its boring and repetitive. But thats not the point. Garrett doesn't know how to win. If he was calling today's plays against the Rams we would have lost. Today we were less predictable than always. Thats because Garrett is no longer calling plays and Linehan is. So what is the point of having Garrett since he doesn't do much on the sidelines?

That was Jim Fassel, not Coughlin.
