What I keep hating is this defense is built for downhill play- it’s long been that way and we don’t have the personnel to resist otherwise, it’s not built to go head to head physical vs physical, and there’s more teams that can take advantage and our way leads to less resistance.
Green Bay isn’t a run oriented team, and even they can run amok on us with the likes of Aaron Jones, that;s not just a down game, it’s revealing a long term problem.
- The 1 tech is indeed an issue,… it's just not the only issue, as you have guys like Maliek and Covington who also are continuing to have their issues vs run as well)
and then you go back to the Woods who is just average and the more the game goes on, the more he gets gassed like the others and you see him stuck, rode out lanes,
over pursuing, and getting pancaked to the ground,
- The LBs do have their own issues too, and they have really been up and down this year - but there have been instances shown around the league, to where you have top notch
DTs built in your interior to brutally beat the opposition, those top notch run stuffers can still run quite an interfere in traffic and clog lanes enough to hide LB flaws to a certain extent and degree.
And that allows those LBs can better roam and flow the field. The Problem here, under Marinelli, we NEVER invest in those top run stuffers,
- You see Vikes drafting Lindvall Joseph in the 2nd round , and he’s a pro bowler that makes a difference in their run defense (even without him we still couldn’t run well )
Those are the ones that alter and change how you have to block and run against them, they force two blockers to occupy them, they may not move much – but they simply don’t get moved. They clog lanes, they force you to run wider or differently, they gained penetration , they get into the backfield for tackle- losses, they are difference makers in what they do best.
- And those elite 1 tech guys generally get locked up in long term contracts for years, they so rarely ever hit the FA market.
- Based upon Marinelli’s recommendations, scheme fit and position value, the McClay group going to keep giving him these collection of cheap, bargain based street FA vet JAGs, etc. that have been a revolving door and ever exposed year in year out.
When you don’t invest or value it,, it’s gonna show.
