Why does Rod seem to hate FA DT's?

Why is it that the cowboys never invest in the DT position? We seem to have no problem drafting or signing CBs but always go cheap on the DT spot.

From watching him here in Chicago, I really think he just thinks it is his scheme. It is not about sacks to him, it is a bend but don't break D.

his last year in a 4-3, he got 6 sacks in 2014.
actually not a bad find for a value find - which mcclay is good at.
he had bad results in a 3-4

I dont know how we are ever going to become a top Defense if we keeping sticking scrubs on the DL.

i totally agree with that sentiment, but paea is not a bad find for a value contract.
he is sought after in FA after 2014 from his good year in the 4-3 at chicago.
rod also knows him from chicago.

Collins isn't a scrub. He's a really good player.

Irving is a good pass rusher from inside.

Free agency is a bad place to get players at a reasonable cost. In this scheme it isn't hard to find DT's who can play. Corners and DE's are much more difficult to find.

It is easy to understand why they don't spend big at DT in free agency.

Besides, most of the time really good players never see the light of day in free agency.

They have invested with Thornton and now Paea. They just don't value the nose.

Unfortunately, that is his philosophy and we will draft to it until he leaves.

And that's the problem. Rod just doesn't understand how a good big NT changes everything on D. And in all honestly...that's the key. Finding that guy that consistantly draws the double. Instead...we keep finding

It really is unfortunate. Rod is a good coach, but he just needs to take guys who can play and adjust.

Would like to see Hankins a Cowboy, but that won't happen.

I don't think he does.

What I think he does is to accept the challenge..

and be willing to accept less on the DL in order for the team to use its picks in other areas than DL..

He is amazing. Better that Garrett at handling playets, too.

Rod seems to not care because he started Nick friggin Hayden for 3 years and told us that he was worth a flip when interviewed. Those were dark days.

Thornton is not a scrub and was better his first year than McClain was his first year. Remember that this is the same McClain that could not beat out Hayden for two years. He succeeded in his contract year after hAyden was gone.

Since the Hayden era we have drafted Collins and brought in Thornton, Irving, and Paea in FA.

They are going to prioritize DE, LB, CB, and S over the 1 again. I am fine with that. Just no Nick Hayden punts at the position.

And the 1T takes away middle runs and cutbacks. In the rush he prevents the QB from stepping up. I think Rod likes to dare OCs to run the ball. I can understand that.
