Why Eagles Passed On WR Roy Williams... Not A Good WR

In short, the Eagles always have to feel that they're "the smartest guys in the room".

And it comes back to bite them all the time.

Remember when the Hawks netted 2 1st rounders from Chicago for a struggling Rick Mirer(one of those 1st's they used on Shawn Springs)?

Pt being that it's not so much the GMs who engineered these trades are "geniouses", but it's alot more to do with the other parties being complete idiots.

Same with the Ricky Williams trade the Saints made with the Skins. It wasn't like the Skins FO did anything brilliant, it had more to do with Mike Ditka literally begging them to trade up.

Yeah-the Eagles FO continues to underestimate their opponents time and time again.

Pat Kirwin on Sirius Radio today said that he knows for a fact the Eagles were hot and heavy for Roy this summer and were in the bidding for him this week.

Why did the Eagles pass on Williams?

The Cowboys' newest receiver isn't all he's cracked up to be. Birds fans can just relax.

With Curtis and Brown both expected to return from injuries following the bye week, the Eagles will be above average at the wide receiver position.

above average?!?!
The eagles' WRs are easily a very distant 4th best in the division. Let's count how many teams have a better WR combo:
Dallas, NYG, Wash, Arizona, Cincinnati, New England, Green Bay, Denver, New Orleans (when healthy), Carolina, Indy, Pitt, San Diego, and there are several that are arguable including the Univ of Oklahoma. That's about half the league...and being in the middle is the definition of "average"

Exactly a few football related terms that will never be used;

Super Bowl Champions, Philadelphia Eagles.

Eagles Hall Of Fame Wide Reciever.

Not to be a nitpicker or anything but the Eagles already have a Hall of Fame wide receiver - Tommy McDonald of their 1960 NFL Championship team and who also played a year or two for the Cowboys early on.

Actually, he will be quite good.

Not doing bonehead things like that & given it's not the 1st time he's done that, chances are he'll do something equally as stupid in the future.

They are just bitter that Dallas got RW and also too cheap to spend $$ to acquire talent. It is hilarious how they always have ample caproom but dont do anything with it.

Eagle fans must be envious of Jerry as he wants to win a Super Bowl and doesnt just talk about it.

Well, they can say what they want but the Eagles screwed up. They needed RWR more than we did. If Jackson starts running routes properly he has a chance to be good to very, very good. He doesn't seem either too smart or possessing good judgment though. He may just be a dumbacre.

his stat line against the eagles last year.....9 catches 204 yards 2 TD's.....I smell sour grapes....

Interesting that you bring that up. For what it's worth, he also went off against the Giants last year for 6 catches for 106 yards. In fact that, and the Philly game, were his only 100-yard efforts.

He caught 3 passes for 36 yards against Washington.

And I believe the only other time he faced our divisional foes was his rookie season. That year, he caught 9 passes for 135 yards and 2 TDs against Philly, 4 catches for 67 yards and a TD against New York and 3 catches for 33 yards against Washington.

The NFL is full of stories about players from bad teams/franchises going to good teams/franchises and playing great. You very rarely hear about the opposite.

I mean why not factor in QB play? It's so OBV this guy is trying to make eagles fans feel better but wheres the question What if Mcnabb through to him instead of Dan O or Kitna.....

Exactly.

The truth is the Roy was freaking depressed playing for that sorry arse franchise. Winning 5 games a year (if a good year), year after year after year...........just takes the fire out of a player after a while.

Look at Moss with the Raiders and Moss with the Pats.

I guarantee Roy is going to appreciate every freaking down as a Cowboy and he is going to go balls to the wall every game.

Yep, talk about jealous birds. Roy Williams is living a dream and his heart is in it. It would be just like any of us fans getting a chance to play.

Posted this last nite but computer Vista'd out on me so post is late

The egirls didn't get RW because they are secretly hoping McChunky will quit and go away...;)

Barry Sanders did.

Sanders played on far better Detroit teams than RW ever has. At least they sniffed the playoffs a few times then.

And while Sanders is a hall of famer, he was also called out several times for lack of toughness and heart, and not caring enough about winning.

You could say the same thing about the Cowboys. I'm still not sure about this trade from a need or compensation standpoint.

I really think this is what we needed to open it up for our offense. Defenses will now not be able to figure out whether to double the #1 receiver lined up on the left or the #1 receiver lined up on the right. It's crazy to think of how much space TO, Williams, Witten, and Crayton will have to work in across the board. TO will no longer be stifled and considered that #1 that draws the coverage from other areas of the field. We now have someone on the other side that will burn defenses consistently if they roll coverage to TO. I really believe our offense will open up now and put up points on a consistent basis.

The defense is already coming along. We just needed to get out of that situation where we're forcing it into double and sometimes triple coverage to try and get TO the ball. That's now a thing of the past. The offense will prosper from this trade immediately. :D
