Why has Doug Free not been cut?

Exactly. It screams desperation and gives the upper hand to all Free Agent RTs. When we sign a free agent we can go to Free to restructure or be cut. We can also force restructure and move inside to guard. We cut him now the only move we have is over paying a free agent.

Free lacks the strength to play inside at the G position.

So we restructure him as a swing tackle. Cutting him today gives all the leverage to the free agents.

Cut him after June first and push the cap hit into next year. Patience. Don't be in a rush to continue mortgaging the future

If they do intend to make him a June 1 cut then there is no reason that benefits the Cowboys by releasing him now. The team could have a myriad of things in mind which obviously includes keeping him. It could also mean that they are keeping him as a contingency in case nothing pans out in FA or the draft or any other of a myriad of possibilities.

They still have yet to deal with Romo and who knows what is in the plans for Spencer. Both of those moves obviously create even more cap room.

They don't NEED to cut him.

They can designate him a June 1st cut. This gets his base salary off the books now; however, all of his remaining prorated bonus money accelerates into the cap now. After June 1st, they can move 1/2 of the accelerated bonus money to 2014.

Current Cap Hit 11.175M
Base Salary -7M
Accelerated Bonus Money +8.35M

Savings on 2013 cap:
Now: 2.825M
After June 1st: 7M

The Cowboys seem to have a plan in place for what they want to do. Let's just see how it plays out.

That is a scary position....does anyone actually believe Jason Garrett and Jerry Jones have a plan that will work.....16yrs later we are still waiting on a plan that WORKS......

I'm not sure about that. Why distinguish a "June 1" cut if it makes no difference between that and just an outright cut?

I think it is primarily an accounting move and not tied to the specific time it happens. A june 1 cut allows some to roll into 2014 vs take the entire hit in 2013.

I assume the NFL teams use a June 1 date for a fiscal year so thats the target if you want it to flow into the next year vs this year. My company does the same but with a different date.

But to the issue, there really isnt a need to play the Free card just yet, as the others have noted.

I think it's more about giving the player a chance at full FA instead of having to wait until June 1st. The team still doesn't get the full cap relief until June 1st but they do eliminate the risk of the player getting hurt during OTAs and having to show up to the team facilities every day.

I also thought this was the case, but after reading the CBA, I don't think the team gets ANY salary relief until June 2nd. Any help would be appreciated.

It helps the player to get released early and sometimes there are roster bonuses or workout bonuses that would be avoided by cutting before they kick in.

I think it was just yesterday someone started a 'look at the Falcons and how they cut vets unlike Jerry who hangs on to them like a hoarder" thread.

Today they cut Sensabaugh. In the next few days probably Connor and Spears.

I suspect this thread will prove to be equally premature when Free is gone June 1.

I thought you could designate a June 1st guy because then you can spread the money across to next year whereas an outright cut would accelerate the remaining to right now.

That's what I thought as well. I just thought it was something that the team could do for a solid to the player. The more I think about it, the more I think that Jones would not wait if he knew for certain that he would cut them on June 1.

He cut Terence Newman March 13 last year FWIW.

I really don't know what is what in terms of the accounting when it comes down to it though.

According to what I read a player designated as a June 1st cut will have the same cap charge as if they never cut him at all until June 1st. It is not used as a way to better a teams cap situation before June 1st...

The money does not go away until June 1. And we have to be under the Cap by March 12. So that would not help us NOW. However for planning purposes it would; and also gives Free a chance to make a deal elsewhere.

Now one thing I do not know is if the cut can be taken back; I doubt it.
