Why isn't Joseph Randle starter material?

It's really hard to know how a backup will produce once they become the starter. He'll get a chance because he's in the mix but he better make hay while the Sun is up because once his Rookie contract is up, I think he's probably gone unless he's figured out a way to be a key piece of the Offense.

He was starter material at Oklahoma State....this is the NFL...not going to happen.

Dez was starter material at Oklahoma State too. Most players, besides Matt Cassel, were starter material in college, so I'm not sure what that has to do with anything. Randle looked good every time he touched the ball last year and there were times that he should have went in for Murray, but Murray refused to get off the field, so I'm not sure why you're so quick to dismiss him.

I think his off the field stuff makes him a risk that they're not really all that thrilled with taking on as a starter at this point.

That's just my feeling on it.

I think he performed as well as we could expect from the backup role, minus the fumble vs. Washington. Who knows how he would perform as a starter but his performance as a backup merits a crack at a larger role. Now, if there are trust issues off the field, that's another problem altogether.

Like ah said before, a buy who can't outrun a security guard likely won't make it in the NFL in the long run, heh.

He may be. He may not be. The Cowboys have likely not made a decision on starter yet. Right now their focus is on acquiring talent at value, and they will assess the best talent later on.

Randle did start for Murray against the Eagles on 10/20/13. He rushed for 1 TD and 65 yards, we won the game 17-3 but that is a limited sample.

The primary reason JR isn't starting material is because there is or will be better material on the roster. I reserve the right to reevaluate that statement after training camp. ;)

With all the talk about drafting a running back high, and the possibilty of trading for AD, why is it that Randle isnt starter material? at worst we could form a rbbc between him McFadden and Williams... do we absolutely have to a one bell cow type of back?

Randle will be in his 3rd year, so we have had time to develop and bring him along, last year he should some flashes with the limited opprotunities he had.

I see McFadden as a CJ Spiller type, good change of pace back. possible KR also

Williams, I'm not sure what he is, the FO seems to really like him, probably a good compliment to the other backs.

The most glaring issue that nobody is really talking about is this. He's absolutely pathetic at pass protection. He looks like a pop warner kid trying to block an NFL player. You just can't take him out every time there is a pass play called. I want Romo to play at least 2-3 more years. That won't happen if we are expecting Randle to pick up a blitz from any NFL LB.

Bc he's not the best back on the roster. He's out the door as soon as they draft a RB.

Unpopular opinion alert: he's probably the best back we have.

I think he could actually be very good, but my concern is his maturity level and how he holds up to being an every down back. I mean How's his pass protection? Can he wear down a defense?

He may just be a nice change of pace back, but honestly I was clamoring for more use of him last year. He saw the field really well and took advantage of the holes the offense opened up. He finds a seam and he gets more out of it than any back we had last year.

Doesn't mean he's an every down back though.

Apparently Randle must be continuing to rack up off the field issues as I type this :/ Really he is clearly a young knucklehead for shoplifting and the incident with his baby mama was unfortunate. But unless he ends up doing more things that land him in jail I'd say he has a chance to play a significant role for the Cowboys. He seemed lighter and quicker last year and his ypc was high when given the rock. I think if the team was gonna cut him it would have already been done. Either they think he can contribute or he is tradable. This is of course is my own humble and personal opinion.

I actually agree with everything mentioned here...

That could really be it. That trust factor being key because he clearly has some talent.

He's good for about 15 reps per game, maybe 20 here and there...
