Why Mike McCarthy Must Not Be Back Next Year

I want McCarthy gone for no other reason than he lied to us about wanting to run the ball. When push came to shove he has repeatedly shown he has no interest in actually playing smashmouth football and establishing the toughness this team needs.

1st drive against the Giants. 1 run and 9 pass attempts. 1st and 10 at the Giants 11 yard line, pass, pass, pass, FG.

The Cowboys did run more than pass the rest of the game. But clearly establishing the run wasn't a priority last Thursday.

- Three 12-5 seasons in a row until this mess of a season the FO set up for him.
- QB has choked in the playoff games.
- He can't manage the clock.
- The players love him, is that a good thing
- The offense has looked unimaginative at times, not enough running the ball, is that his scheme or lack of talent? Neither Zeke, Pollard or Dowdle are starting caliber NFL Rbs. The Oline might start to come together until next season.
- I don't want to start all over again. New scheme for Dak at this stage of his career? New DC for a second straight season? No thanks.
- If not Mac, then who? The Jones don't want real candidates.

And on top of that JJ decides to let the off-season be an exercise in how NOT to do things for a new season, setting up the exact predictable disaster we’ve witnessed in 2024.

So after two wins against less than stellar opponents, the talk is now drifting to the idea of keeping Big Mac? Here are the reasons (in no particular order) why that’s a very bad idea:

• McCarthy has had 5 full seasons to do something in the playoffs and has one wild card win to show for it. That isn’t going to get better next year. Year 6 will have no magic. Most modern era coaches who have deep playoff runs do it in the first 3-5 years, not after.
• Keeping Big Mac keeps a bad culture intact. This culture needs a reset. Despite being a good coach overall, his teams are penalty machines and never seem to have the discipline to pay attention to details. We need a coach with some kahones that can impact this culture despite the Jones illness that has crippled this team.
• McCarthy has an outdated offense. Yeah I know this year’s offense was almost weaponless. But Mac’s “west coast” style offense is a throwback to the past as opposed to what we see from the better teams. This team needs a new offensive facelift.
• Keeping McCarthy sends the wrong message. I know there’s no real accountability in this organization as long as Jerry and Giggles skate for their sins, but winking at the HC who has presided over a nearly year long home winless streak and the most embarrassing playoff loss in team history must be cleansed not renewed.

In closing, I feel bad for Big Mac. It’s extremely hard to function like even a semi-normal head coach with this ego-crazed owner. But if we’re stuck with Jerry, we cannot also be stuck with McCarthy. It will make it worse not better.

What a load of crap! You would let Mike McCarthy go based on the outcome of one playoff game? You're a tyrant for thinking that way. You obviously care nothing about the battle during the regular season and don't value what it takes to go 12-5 in the regular season. McCarthy deserved a new contract a year ago. Totally get all those points. After a while every coach's time comes to ride off and let the next guy bring a fresh perspective. McCarthy has had a good coaching career, I think he's a pretty good motivator, but he really doesn't give the team a tactical advantage around xs and os.

I agree McCarthy is a very good HC. I disagree with you on Parcells, his time here, he was not a good coach his time had past and he was not willing to adapt. Parcells was good with the Giants and not so good with the Pats, Jets and definitely not here with us, he was terrible.

Garrett was a good coach too, unfortunately he and McCarthy, Jerry handcuffed them and they could not do their job as HC.

Yes a new scheme would do wonders for Dak. We all know Dak throwing isn't the answer. 35, 40, 45 pass attempts are a sure loss. He needs a running game. Get a RB1 in here with Dowdle, get the OL straightened out and a new blocking scheme (PLEASE!) and watch how much better QB he will be. This isn't new news. We have known for years what it takes for Dak to be successful.

Truth is MM is a comfortable lap dog for Jerry and MM doesn’t seem to care as long as the checks don’t bounce. The more folks want him gone the more Jerry will push back and chances are he gives MM a new contract, his logic will be look we won some games at the end doesn’t matter the wins were against cellar dwellers. Good points. And I think Jerry hates hiring a new HC. He would have to once again try to find someone who will put up with his intrusive and undermining habits.

Most self respecting NFL head coaches don’t want the headaches of having an ego-crazed owner/GM who is increasingly a loose canon. On top of that, Jerry and son don’t know how to build a playoff winning roster in the cap era. They just just don’t get it.

So…keeping McCarthy may be his only option.
