Wilcox hurt in practice

Players get hurt could be story book game for Heath, but somebody will need to step up if Wilcox can't go.

The two areas with the least amount of depth on this team are the ones getting hit with injuries unfortunately.....DL of course and now the backend.

I think it's a fear of the unknown right now. We simply don't know how well Heath will play. Yes it might be huge. It could be almost a non-issue. I'm mildly concerned but that's it.

I'm not throwing the towel in but I'm not going to pretend we're just dandy with Heath back there either. Maybe he'll do fine but we have little data to make any assumptions.

I'm not throwing in the towel, either. I was just pointing out. This defense has the worst luck over the last year of staying healthy. I have no idea about this Heath guy so I can't comment. Honestly have never even heard of him, which is the same for most of our DL. I don't know them, either.

Was heath even on the roster to begin the year?

I don't remember but I can find out. I feel the same way as you.

I remember Heath forced a fumble and was the second coming of Christ.

This was the preseason.

So I guess we are good?

Could be a nightmare game for Heath. I just don't see the speed or coverage in his game.

Seems like a good idea to me to send Vega back to the practice squad and bring up Jakar Hamilton or Pellerin. I'd be making that move pretty quickly.

I agree. I don't know how Heath will play, but the less of Danny McCray I see on the field with the defense, the better I'll feel about the secondary.

I would bring up Jakar ASAP. But who do you release? If Dunbar and Murray both dress do you release Tanner? The might have to make a move in the next day if this is bad

Really tough news if he's going to miss significant time. It sounds like the team was getting comfortable enough with Wilcox as a 1-deep safety behind corners playing man to let Church come up more and more in run support. I doubt they'll have that kind of confidence in any other safety on the roster.

It's a tough loss but the good thing is that he will be back and not out for significant time or for the season.

I may have missed the latest update. Have they made any announcement or any news about how bad the knee injury was?

An MRI confirmed that strong safety J.J. Wilcox has suffered a sprained right knee that is expected to keep him out of Sunday’s game against Detroit, a source said.

Wilcox suffered the injury during Thursday’s practice. The rookie moved into the starting lineup in Week 3 and has steadily progressed. He currently ranks seventh on the team in tackles with 28 and has knocked down a pass.

The injury opens the door for another rookie, Jeff Heath, to pick up his first NFL start. He’s the likely replacement for Wilcox although Danny McCray will also be counted on to play more than usual againsts the Lions.

I think some are under rating Wilcox. He was a beast in the run game and his coverage has gotten better. He's a playmaker. Should have two interceptions this year. When's the last time we had a safety have two ints before the first half of the season was over? That pass breakup to Desean was awesome. He has the swag that's been missing back there for years. I hope Heath is ready.

It looked like Wilcox was playing a lot of man coverage vs. Celek last week while Church was the 1-deep safety. I hope this injury doesn't make the Cowboys play less man coverage. Church or Heath should be able to do a okay job on Pettigrew, who is dealing with a hamstring injury.
