The Bucs have overvalued safeties for a long time. Remember when they drafted Mark Barron? Wilcox was a ST ace and a good backup safety. He is Kenny Gant, not worth millions.

Bucs signed FS J.J. Wilcox, formerly of the Cowboys, to a two-year contract.

The deal is reportedly worth "up to $8.5 million." A third-round pick in 2013, Wilcox only started four games last season but had his best year as a pro. Bringing in Wilcox likely means Tampa Bay is moving on from free agent Bradley McDougald.

I didn't want to lose him either but most of us figured he would've been a roster cut a year ago.

Wilcox is a decent player in small doses, I believe he is a liability as a full time starter.

As far as the S position goes, we're only really losing Church's leadership. Time for Byron to step up. The combination of Heath, Frazier, and a draft pick should be an upgrade imo.

Frazier is unproven and who knows what round our draft pick will be.

Wilcox could hit. Nothing to brag about when it comes to coverage, pretty much a liability. However, the big-hitting safety in today's NFL, is almost extinct due to recent rule changes such as defenseless receiver and no more head shots or leading with the helmet.

Safeties who can't cover will soon be extinct.

But, it is nice to see that numerous Cowboy players last year are getting offers from other teams this year. Shows the GM/frontoffice/coaches put together a pretty good roster of talented players. So, far only Claiborne, Carr, and Escobar haven't got offers yet. Did I miss anyone?

Jabrill Peppers...come on down....your time to be the S we been needing so badly...and you can be the return guy also....
More like a safety in round 3 and corner round 1. There's better third round safeties than 3rd round corners. I hope Dallas knows that

Church getting 6.5 mil/year
Wilcox "up to" 4.25 mil/year

Looks like the front office knew what they were doing when they re-upped Heath last year and got him for less than 2 mil a year.

My understanding from reports were that the Cowboys hoped to be able to compete for Church but, he quickly rose above their price.
The reports also stated that as soon as the season ended they cleaned out the locker for Wilcox and had no interest in retaining him.
There are several FA that the Cowboys will not pursue.

Darn. I liked Wilcox and believe he is an ascending player. Looks like we're going to be a younger and hopefully more athletic overall secondary.
