You're reading a lot into a radio interview that Cowboy Joe has paraphrased for us.

I took his comment more as they're going to keep adding DL and eventually one will become a War Daddy as opposed to counting on any 1 specific player to be the savior.

Realistically there was only 1 near-guaranteed "War Daddy" pass rusher in this past draft. All others had significant question marks.

They didn't have a 1st round grade last on Taco or any other available DE at 28 so its not a surprise if McClay doesn't consider Taco to be a "War Daddy." Those guys are taken much earlier in the draft.

They had Taco rated at #19 on their board. They had 18 players rated as 1st round picks.

I fail to see why you're so determined to prove Taco Charlton is destined to become a failure when his career is still in its infancy. Who's to say that he won't reach the level of someone like Greg Ellis, given the proper amount of time to prove it. Neither one of us have a guaranteed idea to put forth as to what Taco is destined to prove in the years to come.

I see nothing productive in predicting his demise at a point in his career when he hasn't had a chance to prove himself one way or the other. It wouldn't hurt to give a rookie the benefit of the doubt and try to be more optimistic that he'll pan out. I'm perfectly willing to do that at this juncture. Let's give the guy a chance before assuming the worst.

It is certainly plausible that he could be a Greg Ellis player in terms of production, and if you would say would you take that level of play now, or wait and see, I would take that level of play from him right now. Having said that he is a different type of player than Greg Ellis, so that may not be the best example.

If he's not that level, I'll accept it when the time is appropriate to do so. Right now, Taco is still in the embryonic stage of development, so assuming him not to compare with Ellis at this time would be premature. It never ceases to amaze me how some of us pretend to have all the answers, well before the evidence has had any chance whatsoever to be proven, one way or the other.

How could you take that level of play right now, well before his development even makes it possible to do so? You couldn't. Seems to me that the least we could afford him as fans is sufficient time to demonstrate his abilities or to fail, if that's even in the cards. Are we so over-anxious to demonstrate our knowledge that we're somehow compelled to jump the gun? I'm already on record to suggest we give him a year or two to prove himself as being either worthy or unworthy of praise. Whether he succeeds or fails, so be it.

I would take Greg Ellis level of play out of him rather than potential upside or downside because I think the smart money says his upside is Greg Ellis without Ellis' speed.

So not a "war daddy". Just another body to throw at it and hope that by combining several players you might get the production of one "war daddy"?

Interesting.

He is a decent receiver. But McClay really needs to get a grip here. There is only ONE Lance Dunbar. That kind of generational talent is hard to replace.
What worries me here is that Linehan will be putting Hilman in on 3rd downs now.

Based on will clays interview, the FO already knows there's not a war daddy on this team. Just gonna try to rotate players so hopefully they make a war daddy type impact.

Pass rush by committee. Something you gotta do when you don't have that work horse. Very similar to rushing by committee. Until you get that Zeke Elliot, you just rotate mediocre rbs.

It just seems they are bound and determined to compartmentalize roles with the RBs and they seem to feel the "Dunbar" role is crucial.

Leaked out of Stephen Jones mouth...

I've seen you post that before, but I don't recall ever seeing that reported. I remember that they had 1 player with a first round grade (the RB Cook) and that Taco was among the top players on the board, but I don't remember ever seeing that he had the highest second round grade.

Have a link to that? I know he was discussed as part of a group of players to consider and that they knew he would not be around at 60. But I do not recall Stephen Jones specifically saying he was the highest ranked player left on their board. We already know he was not ranked as a 1st rounder.

I hope taco can be as good as JPP, nick perry, or Vernon
If not I'll be sad. I'll give him 2-3 years to evaluate though.

Personally, I would too. I think his size is similar, though, and you're correct about Ellis' speed being better. I've also heard some scouts that think his first step is very good, while others don't. Taco is reportedly a tenacious and relentless competitor, though and it makes up for whatever he lacks in speed according to some. I'm anxious to see what he can do against OLs other than ours, where practically nobody really fares that well.

I hate when people bring up Greg Ellis, not because i dislike him as a player, but because of who we didnt draft.
