I hate when people bring up Greg Ellis, not because i dislike him as a player, but because of who we didnt draft.

Partially true for me.

Ellis grated on me because of his constant complaining and whining about his role and getting the proper amount of attention. He was without a doubt one of the neediest players we have ever had. He had a woe is me attitude and as a team leader, he was part of the losing culture for most of his career.

Totally agree. The biggest problem Ellis had was that he was "the guy taken instead of Randy Moss". But if Moss had been that pick, it was right after so many scandals like the Cowboys "White House" that the Dallas media would have destroyed Moss no matter what. It would have been the Dez Bryant situation times twenty.

You're correct 100% about the "White House" scandal putting a hex on any chance for Randy Moss to be drafted by us. Jerry wasn't about to risk inviting another bad backlash after that happened. When we drafted Ellis, it was a step down for most fans and I was disappointed, too, along with most of those who felt that way. Yet, Ellis had a better career than many gave him credit for . . . towards the end, his dissatisfaction with the FO didn't do him any favors, either. In terms of on-field production, however, he was productive enough to merit satisfaction, I thought.

Have a link to that? I know he was discussed as part of a group of players to consider and that they knew he would not be around at 60. But I do not recall Stephen Jones specifically saying he was the highest ranked player left on their board. We already know he was not ranked as a 1st rounder.

He said Taco was the 2nd highest ranked player remaining. There was a RB available that they had ranked higher than Taco but I think that player was ranked as a 1st round pick (Probably Dalvin Cook).

Yep -- I wanted Moss pretty badly, despite his less than spiffy reputation, We needed a good WR at that time and I can recall being in a bit of a funk over us having taken Ellis instead of Moss for quite some time. Obviously, Randy was, too, since he let it be known so many times. Ellis did well enough on the field to calm my angst but when he started whining over his role years later, I got turned off again, like so many others did.

I think it was reported in other places as well. There might even be a video on the Cowboys website of Stephen saying it.

I'm certain that he said Taco was the 2nd ranked player after the RB. The only thing I'm not 100% on is if the RB was ranked as a 1st or 2nd round player. If the RB was ranked as a 1st then Taco was #19 and if the RB was ranked as a 2nd, then Taco was #20.

There was obviously a big thread here about it.
