Yeah but I still think Gregory was worth the risk. I know a lot of people disagree but he was a Top 10 talent and the Cowboys thought they could help him get over his drug issue. I don't think you can just stop doing things like that have huge upsides.

For example, a guy like Noah Spence.

Gregory was special dumb though. Failed his drug test during the combine. There's risks like Spence who you mentioned, and there's sure fire no's (Gregory)

I understand what he is saying, I think we all do, or should. However when may lose 4 players in the secondary, and still need major upgrades on the DL. Still may need a LB or two.
And they will not be active in the FA market, other than getting the same type of players we may lose....you better be drafting defense, as the only thing we need on the offensive side is a future RT and a WR opposite of Dez.

Defense dude, defense......unless we resign more than half of our FA's on D...draft defense....
Last time dallas lost out on all its def prospects they 3nded up with zack martin

So two games out of the year means what exactly? Falcons only scored 15 against the Eagirls does that mean they didn't score st will against teams?

In their last 6 games...Atl points scored:
44
36
38
33
41
42

Yikes! And our pass rush/pass defense is quite a vulnerability.

Best player available regardless of position.. literally don't give a damn about cdap players or reaches just because we need a body there.

Well, then, Midlands lad, let us draft 2 WRs and a running back and an O lineman in rounds 1-4!!
To heck with the defense! We got the best available louts! For offense, that is.
Meanwhile, our clownish secondary makes it necessary for Dak to have to score 30-35 points per game. No pressure there!
And, workaday blokes, I am not saying secondary rookies can step in to save us next season. But I would expect the draftees to be ready by 2018.
Face it, our deep secondary is CFL ready, not NFL ready.

He's right. If the best players available are on offense that's where you should go.

I'm not taking a pass rusher round 1 if there is a better talent available on offense.
You do know that New England and the Steelers always go for need. they are more interest in how the player fits system and need. That has worked pretty good for them don't you think? From a post I have already made "So, the draft is about smoke and mirrors? Picking the best player works when you are already set at all positions. When you are not really good in an entire portion of your team that does not work. Now If you said the BPA at positions of need then you are solving problems. Otherwise you are the Dallas Cowboys of the last 21 years. "

Good. Talent acquisition in the draft should be BPA. Obviously, if you have a desperate need at a position, and say a G is ranked just a tiny bit higher than a DE, you take the DE in our case.

He's following the right approach.

In our case this year, there just really isn't that much top end offensive talent and it's stacked in exactly what we do need which is DE and secondary. The chances are pretty good that our first round pick will have a defensive player as BPA anyway.

Trying to predict 2nd round is a crap shoot, any number of players could be BPA there. But, again there's going to be a very good chance it's defense or WR.

This is really good draft for us. I wish there were more Tackles available to push players down in the 1st and 2nd, but it's looking like our top 3 picks could yield some really good players that match exactly what we need.
I'm hoping for exactly that. We'll said!

So we have BPA talk on this thread. What if... and I know it's a BIG IF... what if McCaffrey is there?

basically they are gonna take the best player at each spot, even if they are not a defensive player.
But need has to come into play, if a def player is there and maybe little lower on their board then maybe they should take the def player
if they dont need that offensive position,.
why take a TE over a LB ?? I might go with the best def player at each spot of round 1-4
But hey they are gonna do it their way, so no telling what they do.

This is Wittens final contract season. Will we resign Terrance Williams and Butler ?Who is our backup QB going to be? What about looking for OL for backups if Leary leaves or for Free ?Will we resign Claiborne ?

I could defintely see an effort on offense in draft based on our off season decisions even with the DL a major concern.

Really, this is the smart way to build a team. If, when our pick is due, the best player is an offensive player, you take him. Don't force picks. That's how your team and talent gradually erodes. Conversely, you see that our team all of a sudden jumped up and won the NFC East. That's due to shrewd and clever drafting and taking the best players available.
I'm sure that if every time our number comes up, if the best player is an offensive player, and we pick them, we'll be back here next year doing the same thing.

That's a very interesting situation. He could go top-ten but he also could easily slide and that would make things interesting for teams at bottom of round 1.

My hunch is that the Cowboys would pass on him, even so.

A Reggie-Bush type seems like a luxury right now.

Totally agree: I am reminded of the 1979 draft where we had Joe Montana rated as our highest available player and passed him over . . . .
