Isn't there something...........wierd, about the narrative behind his story? Just seems odd he comes in drafted and now he is just sitting on concussion protocol for weeks and weeks?

Last year was a redshirt year....this year is a dark redshirt year...... we must have convinced him to take another 500k to not play..... but we can keep his rights for another year if he is 'injured'

I think not practicing for 4 months during the season really stunts his growth but they weren't going to play him any how after showcasing him in the preseason....... he was too good????

That’s up to him.

I still don’t think it’s that serious. The team has to give the impression it’s serious due to league rules. He was celebrating making the team and he told reporters he was good prior to the last preseason game.

Thanks, if thats the case Im all in on Rico. Dude looks like a beastly redzone weapon already. Id love to see him ACTUALLY PLAY.

No he will not contribute this year. Old man written takes 95% of snaps. Hana gets like 4 plays when they run that 12 personnel and swaim gets like 1 play. After that Rico can have anything left over.

Too many cooks in the kitchen for him to get any meaningful production.

I wouldn't be opppsed to witten taking 10-12 less snaps again and giving them to the younger guys but we know that's not going to happen

Only the Football Gods know for sure about Rico Gathers -- they may know but they're not telling. By the time he's ready to contribute, it might very well not be much before season's end or perhaps in 2018. That endless concussion didn't do his career any favors, that's for sure.

Of course, I'm assuming his long hiatus wasn't just an excuse to keep him on the roster and away from another team. Here's hoping he truly makes some impressive headway before too long if he's ever destined to become a real factor with the Cowboys. Rico's just too talented to be wasted.

were getting close to him coming off of IR (right?). Do you think he will actually show something over the 2nd half of the year? He’s another weapon, and should be a serviceable blocker when in. I don’t have expectations one way or another, but just remembered he should be back soon.
Ask the Cowboy doctors. They know far more than anyone in here.

Short answer NO. Rico won't be elevated to the 53 man active roster because they aren't carrying 5 tight ends and I doubt they want to cut any of the 4 current active tight ends.

Moreover Mr. Progress Stopper Witten would get all the snaps anyway and all the cap space so what's the point?

Witten needs to be off the field for half of the tight end snaps.

As much as I like him I’m not sure he will have any impact on this team ever.

What reports are there recently? I haven’t been following because I forgot about him.

Is he still said to be recovering or is his absence just a product of not being able to return due to being IR’d
It's been pretty quiet for weeks, but a few days ago Talkin Cowboys said that his injuries were more than a concussion. Due to the angle of the hit, apparently he hurt his jaw and neck. They also said that even though he's not officially practicing, he's been working out on the side. It sounded a bit like spin to me coming from Spags, but take it for what it's worth.

The "spin" being (IMO): He's not cleared to practice yet but don't get all worried about it just being a concussion even if he misses all year.

Just a serious question with zero snark.

What on earth makes some of you so eager to see him hit the field, right now, when the die is already cast for the offense?

What exactly is it that you think he will do?

Run roughshod like he did in the preseason against players that are not even in the league anymore?

Is he so beastly that you just can't wait?

Exactly, they have to have some flimsy excuse to IR him and this is it. The NBA used to let teams IR guys with "back spasms" which have absolutely no traceability.

I say let him learn and grow... The GOAT can hold it down

I would say you have no other choice.

His concussion saved the team from having to make a big choice to keep an underqualified player on the 53 because he oozed potential.

He is not ready. He can do selective things due to his athleticism, but he is not ready to be an every down TE. Or even a specialized one for that matter.

No argument here completely agree

He proved he is a mismatch in the Red Zone...... that is a specialized role right there
