Willy McGinest Thread

Foolish? It was a simple cost-benefit analysis. It doesn't seem like the decision was even close to me.

Agreed. A good player, true, but the NFL today is about cost/benefit more than pure talent.

Patriots cut Willie McGinest in salary cap move

FOXBOROUGH - The New England Patriots released linebacker Willie McGinest in a salary cap move, ending a 12-year relationship with the NFL’s all-time postseason sack leader.

The release of the two-time Pro Bowler was announced Thursday, the day after the NFL owners voted 30-2 at their meeting in Grapevine, Texas, to extend the collective bargaining agreement with the players for six more years, resulting in a new salary cap figure of $102 million.

The 34-year-old McGinest carried a salary cap figure of more than $7 million for next season. The veteran linebacker is now a free agent and can sign with any team, including New England.

McGinest, who has been with New England his entire career, was the fourth pick of the 1994 draft out of Southern California. He played in four Super Bowls, including three Patriots victories. His 16 postseason sacks rank ahead of Bruce Smith (14) and Reggie White (12).

A two-time Pro Bowler, McGinest ranks third on the Patriots’ all-time sack list with 78, just 1.5 behind Julius Adams. Andre Tippett tops the list with 100 sacks.

McGinest has played in 171 games, ninth on the Patriots’ all-time list.

Besides McGinest, kicker Adam Vinatieri, wide receivers David Givens and Troy Brown, tackle Tom Ashworth, receiver and punt returner Tim Dwight, tight end Christian Fauria, linebackers Don Davis and Matt Chatham and running back Heath Evans are free agents.

The Patriots also announced the signing of defensive back Artrell Hawkins on Thursday.

Hawkins signed with the Patriots as a free agent on Nov. 15, 2005. The seven-year veteran, who moved from cornerback to safety, started four of the five games he appeared in and made 16 tackles.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound defender was originally drafted in the second round of the 1998 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, who he played for six seasons.

Future doesn't mean immediately though does it?

Therein lies the key difference.

FWIW, losing Glover was/is foolish.

McGinnist as a mentor is possible. But to Ware, not Canty or Spears most likely. That is Ellis' role.[/QUOTE]

What does Ellis know about 3-4 DE??????
Spears and Canty playing for SABAN/GROH in collegeknow so much more about a 3-4 Pro defense than Ellis ever did.
Willie knows all the 3-4 roles better and is a solid veteran - I guess push with Ellis on being a "pro" presence.

McGinnest plays Ware position in 3-4. McGinnest was a DE by trade and is a Nickel pass rusher. He like Ware is no 3-4DE.

Agreed -he is a mentor to Ware. Willie has played all the exact roles we will ask Ware to. Wille is spot on a Vet-Leader and mentor to Ware.

What is there to know about being a 3-4 DE? In that vanilla scheme they ran last year, it wasn't too tough. "Uh, I've got two gaps."

Unless he's totally overwhelmed by the money, I don't see him going to a dog team like Cleveland. He's used to winning and the playoffs. It's either us or SD.

Cowboys | Team will pursue McGinest
Thu, 9 Mar 2006 06:12:50 -0800

The Boston Globe reports league sources said the Dallas Cowboys will be one of the teams that will pursue free agent LB Willie McGinest (Patriots).

Not exactly a surprise, but I thought it would make some happy on this board.

Sorry, this probably should be merged in the other W. McGinist (sp?) thread.

Yes - makes sense we are interested.

also mentioned Browns, Chargers As teams of interest in signing him. Jets will also get linked.

This news is great but I perfer Lavar Arrington and Julian Peterson....

We probably could get Willie McGinest for a cheap price....knowing how Parcells do...

and Overall sign T.O.

I think Arrington and Peterson are going to be hugely expensive.

McGinest...already been in league 12 years

not all that interested to be honest...

The day you figure out the quote feature I will be so happy.

I'd say Ellis spent an entire season playing DE in a 3-4 scheme and knows more about it than you do. I'd also say that Bill Parcells has over 2 decades worth of experience coaching it and is adamant about increasing Ellis' role in the scheme this year. Or are you still calling him a liar?

Oh, and for your information the difference from DE in a 4-3 to DE in a 3-4 is not nearly as wide a gulf as your imagination dreams it is. If it was, Ellis would not have played it so well.

You'd be wise to stop viewing Ellis as a threat to Spears or Canty and start viewing him as an asset to this team, defense, and scheme. Oh, and pay attention to what Bill Parcells says now and then. Or didn't you learn anything after your smear campaign of Al Singleton blew up in your face?

:wink2:

Willie has a good two years left in his tank...we have a very young front on the defense. I sign him to a two year deal...maybe 3 if the 3rd year is a way out for us. Still draft that young Lawson or Wimbley.

A good vet price...yeah...get him. If he wants a pay day to finish his career off....forget it.

I ke4ep seeing some discussions on the need for starting MLB....curious as to why? I personally think Burnett will be a very good MLB in Dat's spot. I'd like to draft another MLB in the lower rounds, but I feel Burnett has playmaking abilities.

Thoughts? Why do some think he's not the answer?

Because the dude has gone under the knife more times than a Thanksgiving turkey.

But if Bill is trying to win it all this year or next (and he is), then it makes perfect sense.
