I go one better Witten equals Derek Jeter. Both are pure class and played the games of their respective sport the way it should. I know Jeter played for the Yankees but he is the closest player I can come up with in the modern era.
I know I'm not that old but you might be too young but you might be too young to know that before Derek Jeter there was Don Mattingly

I am a baseball fan. When I watched Pudge Rodriquez I knew that I was watching one of the top players to ever play his position. Johnny Bench, Carton Fisk, Mickey Cochrane, Yogi Berra. You just knew you were watching one of the very best ever to play catcher. Jason Witten is the tight end version of Pudge as a Ranger.
good analogy..

I was around 10-13 years old at his peak but my young memory recalls that Jay Novacek was a pretty stand up guy, and my first beloved Cowboys TE. I still don’t think he is on Witten’s level in many ways, but he will always be one of my favorites.

Without the access that we have now, it’s impossible to say what kind of guy he was from a leadership perspective.

Novacek was pretty salty toward the media, and he wasn't particularly a leader in the locker room.

Witten treats everybody he meets with the sincerest of respect, and players thank him all the time for the impact he's had on their lives. Demarco Murray credits everything to Witten. Many players do.

Much like Staubach. Find footage of guys like Thomas Henderson and Charlie Waters talking about him. They can barely speak, they get so emotional.

THAT is what I'm talking about. Not just great play.

You think Dirk Nowitzki is classless?

Probably the only person on the planet...hater or not....that honestly thinks that.

Pretty sure...I mean 1000% sure....that you are the one being classless here.
This is not even debatable

How old are you?

Oh, whatever. We've sidetracked a Witten thread
wow he is clueless Dirk was and still is the definition of class when it comes to sports..

Grew up watching Mattingly. One of the best Yankees of all time as far as character and how the game was to be play. Too bad he never won a WS. Before Mattingly there was Thurmond Munson who life was taken in an airplane crash.

_irk is and always was a class *** flopper. That 2006 series still haunts my memories sometimes. And the whole 2007 season up to the playoffs. I was super glad when the underdog Golden State Warriors team knocked pretty boy Cuban off his high horse that year. That year's Mavs team was almost as annoying and hateable as the Warriors from the past few years, and that's saying something.

Plus the whole weird jungle fever thingy with _irk.
That is the dumbest thing ever written on the internet. Hammer stupid.

Yeah, after posting it, it occurred to me he's not quite on Witten's level, but still, he will likely always be my favorite Dallas Star of all time.
Yeah he was my favorite NHL player as I first got into hockey when I moved to Minnesota when they were the MN Northstars and I moved back to TX at the same time they moved to Dallas. It was destiny!

I don't know that poster well, and I very rarely use the ignore button.
But that comment let me know he's someone who has posts that aren't worth my time....present or future.
Actually put him on ignore just to clean up the thread.

Nobody whined like Timmy....ever
He never once fouled anyone in his whole career...according to him.
But he was great though. I followed him from Wake Forest all the way through.
Not sure why you feel obligated to diss Dirk. The guy is all good. A truly great dude.

Dissing Dirk is off limits but it's open season on Duncan. Ok...

I love the cowboys but Dallas is Dirk’s town until further notice. If you don’t live here then you might not understand his star power in the metroplex

Today got me thinking of the best players who were also the best people to come through DFW.

I could only come up with three more.

Dirk Nowitzki
Roger Staubach
Michael Young

You hear the same things about those four guys.

Roy Tarpley.

He's the Tim Duncan of the NFL (without the rings). Humor me. Lived most of my life in San Antonio.
If we were comparing him to the Spurs, I would compare him to David Robinson before Tim Duncan. David was a much better man than Tim. Witt and David were dominant players and great guys.
