Darren Woodson was on Fitzsimmons and Durrett's radio show. They asked him what impact he thought Brian Waters would have on the team. Woodson was surprisingly skeptical, saying that for people to think a guy can get off the couch 18 months after playing and play at a high level is a lack of respect for the game. He is doubtful Waters will have a positive impact until maybe the second half of the season. He mentioned Carson Palmer coming out of retirement and playing poorly for the Raiders.

Hmmm, comparing G play to QB play is comparing apples to oranges. C'mon man. I don't expect Waters to be a world-beater out of the gate, but he will be an instant upgrade to what we've been previously dragging out there at RG prior to his signature on the dotted line.

I'm skeptical but I'm willing to see what he's got. I know people are going to dismiss Woody because it doesn't go with their feelings. But I think woody has a point and that's why I've been skeptical. Had Waters played last year I wouldn't be skeptical. It's the fact he took that time off and at his age that makes me not get excited. But if he does it that's a win for the Boys. I guess I don't want to be disappointed.

Woody is probably not the guy to ask about O line play. I would call up Nate Newton instead.

This is nonsense. Plenty of players have come back and played well after long layoffs due to devastating injuries.

Waters maybe took a little more time off but he has not been injured at all.

He should be fine.

Nobody knows how he is going to do until he actually plays.

Well in all fairness Nate thought Costa was a player just an FYI. When they were in SF a couple of years ago I was at the radio show lunch and asked Nate on Air what he thought of Costa and he and LA both agreed that Costa was a player

A lot of people--not our fans, but in the organization--think that Phil Costa can start and play well in this league.

I've been told by many "experts" on this board that former players should always be listened to when it comes to discussing football. So here it is. Proof positive. At best Waters will show something in the second half of the season, if at all.

Bill Callihan on Waters from another thread:
"...we did some competitive drills against the defensive line, and you could see all the explosiveness and strength that a Pro Bowl-caliber guard has."

It is true, we can't "know" how he plays until he does so, but all of the available data says he is going to play very well when we put him on the field. I think the only real question is how long it takes for him to get into good enough shape to play the whole game. This is something that Montrae Holland was able to achieve, so I think Waters will be able to do it, too.

Waters did it in 2011 he can do it again. Who the hell knows if he was on the couch for 18 months, what if hes been in football shape this whole time and waiting for his chance?
