Woodson comment on Waters

Why did he make a QB comparison and not mention Peyton? Didn't Peyton come back last year at 36 years old to a new team after missing an entire year and have a spectacular season?

Probably because Manning had a training camp to work into the game whereas Palmer and Waters are cutting their grass one day, heading onto the field a week later.

I don't think is comment is just about missing time. It's about actually getting back into the swing of things.

How is Waters coming back after a layoff any different than a guy coming back from a serious injury....outside of the fact that Waters was home, healthy and apparently working out without restriction while a guy coming off injury has been on the shelf for an extended period and is learning to walk before he can run?

How is it different?

I don't know what is going to happen with Waters but I can see the argument that an OL in his mid-30's would be better after a year off because he didn't take the pounding on his knees, back and shoulders. He may be out of football shape but he also doesn't have any nagging injuries slowing him down.

Its an imperfect example because he had training camp behind him but Marc Columbo was out of football for four years when came to the Cowboys in 2009 and started every game.

My suspicion is that Waters is going to be able to play, quickly, and at a high level. But I understand what Woody's saying, and I think we really don't know how well he'll play until we actually see him take a snap with the rest of the OL in a game that counts.

Or maybe he's a former player who's giving his opinion based on knowing what it takes to prepare for a season.
A lot of people--not our fans, but in the organization--think that Phil Costa can start and play well in this league.

Then why relegate him to the bench?

Waters will be better then Bernie

That's pretty much the only thing anyone here needs to know. I don't care how he is mentally or physically starting out, he's still better than anyone else we'd trot out there at RG. Because of this, I play him week 1 and let him catch up in the actual games.

the only comparison between Palmer and Waters that I care about is that they both have HUGE heads...the difference is that Waters is a huge person overall

Woody is the ultimate Cowboys fan and is doing a great job of sandbagging for us!

If by midseason people are calling for Berny to start again because Waters couldn't cut the mustard, the front office really needs to devote more to improving the line. Fred and Smith are a nice start, hopefully Waters and Leary pan out, but right now so many questions.

Woodson was surprisingly skeptical, saying that for people to think a guy can get off the couch 18 months after playing and play at a high level is a lack of respect for the game.

How do we know Waters is just getting of the couch? Sounds like he is in good shape and ready to roll.

This is yet another former Dallas Cowboys (alla Emmitt Smith) trying to be relevant again and catch the ever-skeptical-of-the-Cowboys-eye of BSPN.

You obviously don't watch Woody much. He is very much a fan of this team and not critical at all except where it is the truth. His comment on Waters might be off but it isn't based on hate for the team, i'm sure.

Because TFred is much better than "a player". Costa can be "a player" but TFred is the qb of the line and so far damn good at it.

i don't know that waters can come back and be the great player he was before he left. but at 80% of what he was he is still much better than what we had. if we get a pro bowl performance from him thats great, but as long as we get nfl guard type play from him thats way better than what we got at guard last year

Hmmm, comparing G play to QB play is comparing apples to oranges. C'mon man. I don't expect Waters to be a world-beater out of the gate, but he will be an instant upgrade to what we've been previously dragging out there at RG prior to his signature on the dotted line.

I love this signing. As it has been mentioned already, he brings a lot more to the team than just his play at G. I wished when he hangs it up that he could go on staff in some OL capacity. He has a lot to offer in different ways.

Just to be clear, I never said he hates the team. But it just seems in this particular case and other comments of his I have read lately, seem to be overly pessimistic. It would have been one thing had he simply said the year off may have a negative impact. But the truth is, it may have not hurt his ability. In fact, one could make just as reasonable of an argument that the year off helped him.

To be honest, I don't expect him to be the Brian Waters of 2011. But as has been mentioned on this site several times, if he is even a shell of his former self, he should still be better than Livings and Bernadeau. Furthermore, I think he's a great addition to be a mentor to our young Offensive linemen Smith, Leary and Frederick. You certainly can't call him a progress stopper, because the young guys that have a future on this line are already starting. Lastly, have two proven starters in Costa and Bernadeau as backups now, gives the Cowboys the best depth they have had in years.

If Woodson truly feels that way, and isn't pandering to the national media, he may need to contact the players union to get his piece of the settlement and get his head checked.
