I like to think about the Waters situation like this: Does he provide an upgrade at the position over what we currently have? I would say absolutely...no way is Waters worse than Arkin or Bernie. He also has the experience to coach the youngsters on the line. That alone makes the acquisition worth it. Just my .02

Waters did it in 2011 he can do it again. Who the hell knows if he was on the couch for 18 months, what if hes been in football shape this whole time and waiting for his chance?

Well, the problem is, when he was asked by the press if he was in football shape, he laughed and said, "No". He said the only way to get into football shape was to play football.

We just want this man to adequately plug a Macy Parade balloon sized hole at one position in our line, not be the QB.
Not at all the same.

I love me some Woodson and generally agree with him, but Waters is a special player who has a history of doing exactly what most Cowboys are hoping he does.

Darren Woodson was on Fitzsimmons and Durrett's radio show. They asked him what impact he thought Brian Waters would have on the team. Woodson was surprisingly skeptical, saying that for people to think a guy can get off the couch 18 months after playing and play at a high level is a lack of respect for the game. He is doubtful Waters will have a positive impact until maybe the second half of the season. He mentioned Carson Palmer coming out of retirement and playing poorly for the Raiders.

What if he actually has stayed in pretty good shape and he plays himself into shape during the season. It's not uncommon for lineman. Also it's more likely that he's an upgrade rather than a downgrade that's where the optimism comes from.

He is probably right but does it matter? We knew what we were going in with and in no way is or was it better than him being there. If it takes game six or seven to hit his stride so be it. I feel his off the couch play is better than or just as good than what we were getting and re difference at game six or seven will be miles and miles ahead of where they'd be otherwise.

How is Waters coming back after a layoff any different than a guy coming back from a serious injury....outside of the fact that Waters was home, healthy and apparently working out without restriction while a guy coming off injury has been on the shelf for an extended period and is learning to walk before he can run?

How is it different?

What I find interesting is the way this board has selective memory when it comes to issues for or against.

It has been stated many times over throughout the years that offensive line is one of the most difficult positions on the field because of all the aspects of playing with four other guys. Blocking schemes, responsibilities, seeing and reacting to stunts, twists and blitzes, it was almost an adage that an offensive lineman takes three years to really become good in this league.

Now I know Waters has shown things in the past, but he has been sitting. And regardless of comparisons to quarterbacks, or corner backs or the towel boy, it will take time for hiom to assimilate with this offensive line.

If...

And this is the most important aspect about it, if he still has anything left in the tank.

I surely don't know that answer. But I'd be willing to venture the team doesn't either. They are betting on the come with this guy.

May work out. May not.

But to save you some typing, what happened with the patriots has no bearing on this. Different team, different situation, and surely the player is older and in different shape.

I hope it works out. But the odds are a great deal longer than some of the hopeful on this site seem to articulate.

I gotta feeling once they see Waters play, it is going to be very tempting to leave him out there until his tongue is dragging the ground.

It helps if he has been going to the gym regularly and keeping in shape instead of on the couch eating dorritos.

Plus I think he stayed in a Holiday Inn last night.

Palmer's QB rating when he walked out on the Bengals was 82.4. His rating his first year with Oakland was 80.5. His completion percentage also dipped slightly from 61.8 to 60.7. All while he was learning a new system, new receivers, etc.

On top of that, Palmer as a QB has never been as good a Waters as on OL.

Why did he make a QB comparison and not mention Peyton? Didn't Peyton come back last year at 36 years old to a new team after missing an entire year and have a spectacular season?

This is nonsense. Plenty of players have come back and played well after long layoffs due to devastating injuries.

Waters maybe took a little more time off but he has not been injured at all.

He should be fine.

That's true. It's like he's been on IR for a year, except he didn't have to rehabilitate from an injury, just work himself back into shape. Of course, most people on IR for a year use training camp to get their feet back under them.

Yes, poor analogy

If he's healthy I see no issues about him not being able to play.

This is yet another former Dallas Cowboys (alla Emmitt Smith) trying to be relevant again and catch the ever-skeptical-of-the-Cowboys-eye of BSPN.

Comparing a long layoff of 18 months to a injury is apples to oranges also. While injured you usually are in touch with team officials and such. Waters went sat on a couch because he was under contract and the only officials he could contact during his contract was the pats. While I have no doubt he stayed in shape he still is 36 try and compare a 34 year old waters that played a full season and signed before the season to a 36 year old waters that hasn't played in 12-18 months is a stretch. I hope he does well because I think he is the best guard on the team but.....

Doubtful that's what he's trying to do.
