Or maybe he's a former player who's giving his opinion based on knowing what it takes to prepare for a season.

Then why relegate him to the bench?

C'mon hoofbite. Really? Frederick is still the best option at center, but the organization believes he can start because Costa has started.

Just to be clear, I never said he hates the team. But it just seems in this particular case and other comments of his I have read lately, seem to be overly pessimistic. It would have been one thing had he simply said the year off may have a negative impact. But the truth is, it may have not hurt his ability. In fact, one could make just as reasonable of an argument that the year off helped him.

To be honest, I don't expect him to be the Brian Waters of 2011. But as has been mentioned on this site several times, if he is even a shell of his former self, he should still be better than Livings and Bernadeau. Furthermore, I think he's a great addition to be a mentor to our young Offensive linemen Smith, Leary and Frederick. You certainly can't call him a progress stopper, because the young guys that have a future on this line are already starting. Lastly, have two proven starters in Costa and Bernadeau as backups now, gives the Cowboys the best depth they have had in years.

If Woodson truly feels that way, and isn't pandering to the national media, he may need to contact the players union to get his piece of the settlement and get his head checked.

As you can tell, Woodson is not negative about the Cowboys. He picks them to beat the Giants. I was really surprised how negative he was about Waters. People are focusing on his comment about Palmer, but that wasn't the focus of his comments. The focus of his comments was "respect for the game." He seemed a little ticked that Waters thinks he's so good he can just get off the couch after 18 months and play (my interpretation).

My guess is that he is viewing it through his own experience and thinking there is no way he could have come back and played at his previous level 18 months after he retired. That's my guess.

Comparing a long layoff of 18 months to a injury is apples to oranges also. While injured you usually are in touch with team officials and such. Waters went sat on a couch because he was under contract and the only officials he could contact during his contract was the pats. While I have no doubt he stayed in shape he still is 36 try and compare a 34 year old waters that played a full season and signed before the season to a 36 year old waters that hasn't played in 12-18 months is a stretch. I hope he does well because I think he is the best guard on the team but.....

Completely agree. There is only ONE other 36 year old lineman in the league, and there are only a handful of them over 33.

I have no issues with what woodson said. he played the game for many years and was great at it. he isn't the type of guy to just spout off or act with bitter and cynical intent. No, he is a heady and calculated analyst.

I do find it funny how so many get butthurt when he makes the slightest negative comment against us.....its like "say it aint so woody"....

While it is hard to compare various positions, i get what he was saying. you cant just sit around, even if you work out regularly, and then come in right before the first game and expect to be a worldbeater. heck, even players who were in supposed football shape will struggle in week 1, because none of them are used to playing 60 minutes yet.

i like the waters signing, i wish it would have happened a month earlier, but it is what it is. i do believe he will struggle some for the first month while he learns his teammates, the system, and gets into playing shape.

Okay. I'll admit when considering his specific comments about Waters along with all the compliments previously made, it does take a little of the bite out of his words. However, I still say he seems a little too confident that Waters will not be ready for week 2 and will not have a good impact on this team long-term. Granted, he is a former player and if anyone should know, he would, but, at this point, I think it could truly go either way. Furthermore, I honestly think Carson Palmer was a very unfair comparison. The Raiders have long been an NFL player retirement home and 1st round bust waiting to happen. You cannot fairly compare 1 person to another person, because your age is not a number it is the accumalative effect of how well a person takes care of themself throughout their life. I'm not going to say I am familiar with Bryan Waters eating habits and exercise routine, much less throughout his life, but many of what Woodson said suggest he does know Waters on that level...and I'm pretty sure he doesn't.

Big difference between QB and OL.

This is true. If he stayed in any kind of shape, it won't take long for him to step right in and be effective. I disagree with Woody in this regard.

Yeah, offensive linemen take contact every snap.

The persecution complex of some Cowboys fans amazes me. No one wins the battle against age. There is a reason why people retire and a reason why there are only a handful of linemen in the league that are 34 or older. This guy isnt some freak of nature type athlete, so I dont see any reason to see why he wont be like every other 36 year old lineman-either retired or playing for Jacksonville.

I am genuinely hoping this works, but I wont be holding my breath about it.

What shows a real persecution complex is not having you and your "I love hating everything, all the time" buddies on ignore.

Sit him and let him get some more practices under his belt. The last thing we need is for him to strain a muscle tomorrow night due to the lack of live action over a full year.

I'm with you it's tempting as hell to trot him out there given how well he already seems to be acclimating himself to being here but I don't think he needs to be out there too, maybe a couple drives at most.
