I can’t believe the lack of love for Witten by some posters in this thread.
The guy was just really good for a very long time.
That’s special right there.
I best guess is that the last impressions stick with fans and was very average at the end of his career.
He should have retired earlier, but that shouldn’t take away from his overall greatness.

Some people need to let the Mexico trip go. Whether that situation was right, wrong, or somewhere in between, it has no bearing on his outstanding career.

I have great love and admiration for Woody. But I'm afraid that ship has sailed. I have great love and admiration for JW. However, because a large amount of his success came from a slightly illegal move. I'm not sure if he really belongs there.

It would be like remembering E Smith from 2000-2002 and saying he was stat padding and playing too long.

Whether it was 2 years or four years, Witten's decline was more noticeable than Woodson's was, imho. Woodson maintained his good effectiveness from '92 to 2003, as I recall. He had 11 very good years. There's no doubt that Witten's last years were less than impressive. I still remember both as having especially great careers, however. As I stated before, Witten just stayed at it a bit too long.

Stop. You are remembering incorrectly. Why can't they both be HOF worthy studs? Why do you have to run one down? Makes no sense.

Another topic on this thread that makes no sense, why should it be expected a starter should help develop a backup?
So that player, on an entry level contract, could take his job at a cheaper rate?
2 TE set halfass gameplan or not, teams will cut someone as soon as their play declines and they got a competent backup plan.
Fasano was in 2006, Bennett in 2008 etc... That's 3 and 5 years respectively into Witten's career. Most players last 3-5 years in the NFL, and Witten became one of the minority to play 10/15+ years. The NFL stands for Not For Long, it would make little sense for a 25-27 year old to start grooming his replacement at that age.

Unless Witten was on a fairwell tour, and it was known to be his last year in the league, why help be replaced?
