Selvie is in a spot where if he has a year like last year, he stands to make a ton of $$ on the free agent market. He was a good starter last year.
We drafted 7 new defensive players and brought in Mincey, Melton, McClain (X2). Are these earth shattering moves? Not really, but they are the sort of things you do when rebuilding a D.
Also, what you miss here is that we could have simply drafted for need - instead we did what good teams do - draft (at least in the early rounds) based on our board. Two offensive players were the top guys left in the first when we picked. We took one instead of a lower rated guy - if you look at the defensive players coming off the board in the first there was a drop off after Shazier. Did you really want us to draft need over value? In the 2nd round we jumped up to get what we rated as the only impact pass rusher left in the draft. That was an aggressive move to bolster the D.
I don't see how you can look at this D and say we aren't addressing the issues. The fact plain and simple is that we are but it takes a few years to rebuild fully.
AbeBeta, you said a lot this morning...and I agree with your summation here.
The defense has changed from a 3-4 to a 4-3 now. The change in related positional fills is in but year two of the change. What the team is doing as to journeymen and veterans, is exactly where this team should be right now. Most successful adjustments are completed within a four year scope of change.
I like what was done in acquiring Ronaldo McClain, Henry Melton, Terrell McClain, and Henry Melton. Myself, I'm glad that Anthony Spencer was cheaply extended to prove himself.
