Garopplo and Cousins got the big paychecks that were precursors to Goff and Wentz, and frankly this is just the trend. Sure, a team can buck the trend, but if they do they are running a big risk of having a poor option at the team's most important position. That's the dilemma.

I think JJ drops the 5th year and it’s a 4 year 140 million contract. Maybe 112 guaranteed. Daks side wanted 45 million for the 5th year.

If it was 35 across the board (which it will never be) the cap hit would be 17% for 2020. So the first year cap hit shouldn't be too bad. But I have a feeling it will rise much faster than the cap will rise. So your prediction of 40Mil for a year or two might be a bit lower than what it actually will be. My guess is that they'll try to structure it 4th year heavy. But easier said than done.

I think mahomes gets the 40 if he wants it. Dak won’t get it. I wonder how much these other QB will get. Not sure if they are eligible for contracts or not. Would watson or jackson get more than 35 a year.

Which is why I think the team isn't budging yet on 5 years.
If they want to cut down big time on the first years cap hit then yea, it'll exceed 40mil easily at some point. Just kept it at "40mil" due to the title of the thread. But yea, it can be in the low to mid 40's depending on how they play with the numbers.

Yeah the 5th year is important. Lets say they went 20, 30 for the first 2 years. You now have 20 million you have to make up for. That's 45, 45 for the last two years. Or 40, 50. Is the cap rising that fast? Hell, the cap may be stagnant next year. If the Cowboys had fully intended to keep Prescott then they made a big mistake by not signing him before his rookie deal was over. They could have dumped most of that signing bonus on to last year's cap hit and the rest of his contract would have been around 10-12% of the cap. But here we are.

Dak's not asking for $40m per so the question is irrelevant. It's just a LIE that keeps being repeated.

Nobody is saying to pay Dak more than what Dak himself is asking for.

You mean, would I pay him more than he’s asking for? No, probably not. Am I comfortable with $35 per for four years, with maybe a premium for a fifth year, which is the only thing I’ve seen reported? Sure.

So we know two things:

-Dak isn't asking for it.
-Even if he was, we pretty much all agree that we wouldn't pay him that.
